I would like to know if anybody knows were I can buy this illusion where you can split yourself in half like David Copperfield did in his live show.

If you are talking about David Copperfield's "Laser," you can't buy it. David Copperfield bought the exclusive worldwide performance rights for it from Steve Fearson (The inventor). There are also a number of topics that discuss this illusion on the Café, try a Café Quicksearch for more info.

Andrew Mayne makes a bunch of different illusions like it. They're not as good, but they are definitely worth taking a look at. I have Bisection.

Jim, brings up a good point: there are other illusions that can give a similar effect. One that comes to mind instantly is Peter Loughran's "Beside Yourself." It, like "Laser" is a one man, stage cutting in half illusion. Depending on your needs it may work for you.

He may be asking about the vertical spliting DC did. I don't believe this is available either.

Dear Jack,
Although David tried to create the ultimate version (as usual) of that illusion in the 90's ("The Blade"), you can find a description of the vertical split or sawing in "The Conjurors' Book of Stage Illusions". It was apparently created by Joseph Ovette and is called "Miss Boots". Regards, D |

I have a version called long devision that was built by illusions by your design a few years before they went out of business.

I wanted to comment on another thread, but it is locked, so doubt anyone will see this.
I had never heard of the Laser Illusion or Beside Myself until a few days ago. What a shame that Steve sold the rights to D.C. on this. I've watched the online demo of this here: http://sweetmeatpumpkinjournal.castpost.com/117582.html and from watching this poor presentation, it is so obvious how it is done. It's a shame to have guys like this 'trying' to make a name for themself online by stealing. Mind you, I've seen worse online demo's than this. But, it only took me 2 or 3 viewings to see through this guy. I've watched D.C. do it online about a dozen times, and there is NO seeing how he does it. I even noticed an audience behind him, which really surprised me. I'm sure there will be lots of ripoff's of this, but hopefully one day, the illusion will be available to 'serious' performing magicians. I like this illusion MUCH better than the new Icarus effect, plus the price tag on that is CRAZY! BEST to everyone... smitty |

Smitty,
I agree the performance is poor, that is the acting is poor, but I liked the illusion. I thought it looked good but I only watched it twice. Oliver |

Yes Oliver, the illusion does look MOST impressive if you watch it at normal size, but I decided to make it full screen. It was only then that I saw the method used.
But, from a distance, on stage, this is MOST impressive. All one has to do is watch D.C.'s performance. I don't think his can be beat. I can't figure how it did it surrounded though. There is NO way all those people were stooges. smitty |

Ifeel that The Coppefield version is nice..rather cute.. for those that have Fearson floating new what was what when they seen DC do it. I was not impressed but it was a nice was to take up time. As for the guy in th video...watching it without sound it was good, it could have been better if he stole the complete routine.LOL There's a lot of talk on here about original ideas and such which I now see myself going back and forth on even though I buy authorized illusions. It come down to when people such as DC buy the right for tricks for 10 years even when he does not perform it now

I like the buzzsaw... just seems like DC takes it and makes it bigger more dramatic!

FYI...
Dan Summers has a new self cutting that is amazing. It uses NO boxes and is self contained. I expect him to have it available soon. Watch for it. Best, Tim |

Unfortunately, as long as there are tricks owned by one person you will have rip offs like the one in the video. Usually they are very low budget and most of the time give away the secret. Did the guy in this link get special permission to do the Laser? http://megaworksentertainment.com/media.html . I think that he does the rising card in almost the same way DC does it. Just wondering.

What a fun site .. I think I saw most of David's act on there, one piece at a time. There is even the Owen Brothers Disembodied w/ our friend in the prop .. can you say Photo Shop?
Sure, we're all amused by sites like this .. but in the end, it makes us all look bad. I can't even imagine how frustrating this must be to David and the other creators of these illusions. Steve |
