I have recently begun to delve into the art of contact juggling. I think I'm going to like it, but I have just one question. My hands are normally quite dry (think it's from all those years of working with concrete and asphalt and such). However, lotion seems to make my hands too "greasy" to properly control the ball. Any suggestions on what I might use?

Lotion and then talc them?
Lotion and then wipe them? Light sprinkling of oil and then cook for 40 mins at 50 degrees Centigrade You could just experiment with different sorts of creams and oils until you find the right one for you. Nigel
I knew a man who kept saying "pliers, pincers, scissors". He was speaking in tongs.

My hands are dry too, and they work just fine. I would reccomend nothing and just learn to use what you got.

Sensei is probably right. It may appear at first that dry hands are making it difficult, but most of kinetic juggling relies on the movement of the hands, not really the friction. The truth is, despite the size of ball, size of hand, slickness of skin etc.; kinetic juggling (CJ) is just really hard. I would suggest stacking the deck in your favor however. Start with a large ball, not a small one (at least 3", perhaps 4" if you can find a light one). I started with a 2.5 and always rolled the ball directly over my middle finger, instead of tracking it between my index and middle finger like many do now (though I still think over the middle finger is prettier). Needless to say it took me longer than any student I've ever taught lol.

Sable is offering very good advice.
If you learn to contact juggle using lotion, you'll become dependent on it. Better to learn with your natural skin quality. |

I've been contact juggling for years and I have very dry hands. You just get used to it. I don't think that there is any difference. I think Jeb said it pretty well, start with a big ball and work with that. One more thing to think about, A ball is not the only thing that can be contact juggled.

Very good point redheadjuggler. Once you get balls down, you can try crazy stuff like eggs, tape rolls, even cubes. My wife uses a ballet slipper. You can try just about anything. I won't say I perform with those things, but it is fun to try.

Dry hands were always a problem for me in coin effects as well. I find that Burt's
Bees Hand Salve conditions and protects my hands better than any lotion I've tried. The hands are greasy for about 10-15 minutes after you rub it in, so work it in about 20 minutes before you start handling props. Another thing that my mother used to do was to rub her hands down with vasaline and slip on some gloves over night. In the morning they would be soft and hydrated, with regular use this offers some rediculously healthy hands. |

Sunday since I was going to be at a park, I put on sunscreen on my arms. The friction changed everything about the contact juggling, as well as club/pin manipulations. It created drag. I managed, but I need to be careful not to put that stuff on before a show.
I still think it's what you get used to, so be consistant. Always use the same lotion or no lotion or sleeves or mitts or whatever you regularly practice with. ~the harder I work, the luckier I get!~ |
