I am interested in locating 20th Century shorts, but the only version I can find use white briefs. Does anyone produce a version with boxer shorts? I know I could sew some in myself, but I was hoping to avoid the need to sew. I'd like to use white boxer shorts with red hearts all over them (typical "cartoon" underwear).

Check K-Mart men's department. They should have some in stock any day now. Don't sew. Use any of the various methods of 20th Century Silks that use ungimmicked silks (see Rice Encyclopedia for ideas OR use Eleazar Goodenough's method for the "Every Century Silks" from The Wizards' Journal #8 on sale at your favorite Magic Nook and cranny).

Is this the underwear puns and jokes department? I'd like to add a brief reminder to stock up on silly boxer short designs from Valentine's Day for your Professor Cheer rope tricks and your Houdini Outstripped replacement shorts. They must be looking a little worn by now.

The premise is that you are going to make the silks pass through his body, but then the shorts come out. So, is this feasible using the ungimmicked methods you suggested? I always thought the traditional 20th century silks just happened "in the hands" and didn't involve a spectator's pants.

The trick you are thinking of is not a 20th Century Silks effect, but one called "Houdini Outstripped." In that one a spectator has a cloth belt about the width of a cummerbund tied onto his waist. Ropes, not silks, are tied onto rings on the cloth belt. Spectators hold the ropes on either side of him as he attempts to escape, and of course, the shorts come out tied between the two ropes, but technically he has "escaped" from the "Houdini Belt." You could use silks instead of ropes, but that still wouldn't make it a 20th century effect.
In a 20th century effect, two silks are tied together. A third silk is vanished, and reappears tied between the two original silks. Where the two original tied silks are placed makes for the comedy when doing the "Bra" version with a young lady from the audience. But a bra is not vanished. Instead a third silk of a different color is vanished and the appearance of the bra comes as a surprise. The third silk may then appear somewhere else instead to complete the effect. See "Rice's Encyclopedia of Silk Magic," Volume 2, page 946 for details. Another possibility for your effect is based on Rice's Baffling Bloomers (ibid Page 1046). In that version of a "normal" 20th century silk effect, the performer is interrupted after he vanishes the third silk (colored the same as your silk shorts). The spectators see the shorts sticking out of the performer's pocket after the attempted vanish and think it is the silk. Instead, it turns out to be bloomers in Rice's version, or silk shorts in your version. This might make a good variation for Eleazar's "Every Century Silks" (Wizards' Journal #8) to be done with boxer shorts. You place a red silk in each of your side pants pockets (replacing the white silks in Eleazar's routine). You vanish a white silk, clumsily, pulling a bit of the white and red silk boxer shorts from your back pocket for the sucker effect. The audience points out your mistake and you reveal that they have not located the white vanished silk, but a pair of white and red Valentine shorts. Now you use Eleazar's Valentine Box vanish to change the shorts into the missing white silk, and the shorts end up coming out of your pants tied onto the ends of the red silks. No sewing, I guarantee it! The only difference is that it happens to you, and not to some embarrassed spectator and you don't have to stick your hands into his pants and risk getting knocked out cold... or asked out to dinner.

Sorry to bump this topic back up, but I have a question.
If I were to buy the 20th Century Underwear Silks, it would be possible to modify the provided underwear into a different garment with the right amount of sewing, etc. right? Oh, and by the way, is the 20th Century Silks covered in Rice's EoSM Vol 1? Thanks, -Vinnie |

Hi Vinnie:
Yes, you can modify the 20th Century Shorts trick, but you do need to be careful on the shorts you select so that they're not too bulky. Silk shorts are probably the best to use. There is a whole chapter on 20th Century Silks in Volume Three of the Rice's Encyclopedia. Ron |

You might be better off following the instructions for any of the ungimmicked silk versions of the trick, rather than buying an expensive set of silks and trying to redesign it to hold something else. As mentioned in one of the earlier posts above, Eleazar's "Every Century Silks" includes a no-gimmick silk variation that can be done with any silks and any item you want to have end up tied between them. However, Ron Reid's caution about not having that vanishing and reappearing object too bulky to work with applies to the various ungimmicked silk techniques, too!
