Forgive me if this has been covered but I could not find it after my search.
I would like to learn some gambling moves for my routine but it seems all the DVDs or videos I have seen only cover the move and not how it's done. I like DVDs the best but any book is also fine with me. I have Expert At the Card Table but are there any other excellent sources? Thanks guys and I am sorry if this has already been covered.

Try Allan Ackerman's Advanced Card Series. There are individual tapes/DVD's and each one pertains to a particular subject. Two of them maybe of interest to you. The one on false shuffles and the one on false deals.

Ackerman does a good job of explaining various moves that you will use in a routine as does Daryl in his Encyclopedia series. Fernando Keops has some good routines and work in his Cheating at Cards DVD. Sal Piacente has some good stuff on his two lecture notes DVD. Richard Turner is an inspiration to watch, but is a little light on instruction on The Cheat DVD. And then there is Darwin Ortiz as well as Martin Nash's Charming Cheat series.
Hope that is of some help. Michael

Glenn Bishop has quite a few "gambling" type routines on his cards DVD's, which include his "punch deck" work. Also, other routines and methods from his own work as well as a lot of other great magicians. Including Mr. Molinari who posted above.

In Card College, you can find chapters on false deals and shuffles. Also I believe you can find the annotated erdnase useful if you like the expert at the card table.

What do you mean by, "gambling moves for your routine?"
Ackermans, as suggested by Jimmy, is a very good route to go. Are you looking for a routine to demonstrate apparent skill and then explain it - or are you looking to demonstrate skill and not let them in on the action only the results of said actions? Jason England has a great riffle sdtacking section in The Unreal Work that at first had me stumped as to how to make it look legitimate (involves shuffling after each card reveal), but I finally figured it out. Ortiz' Cardshark series is great and involves some insane riffle-stacking - be prepared to work. For the record, Piacentes Lecture Notes DVD's offer nothing in the gambling sense. Nothing.

Daryl's Encyclopedia of Card Sleights as Meijin mentioned above is a must guarantee. I learned a lot from his DVDs. Partial advise on Volume 7 teaches false deals.

For the record, Piacentes Lecture Notes DVD's offer nothing in the gambling sense. Nothing. What are you talking about !? For the record : the majority of the material on the Piacente DVD's is gambling routines and the one or two that are not can easily be presented as such . Here is a list from the DVD case : Sals memory opener, The Marlo opener,Sal's ace cutting routine , Sals ace cutting routine II , The Vernon poker deal revisited , The McDougal stack out done ,Paint poker , Rollover Aces , Stop !! , The riffle stack , The faro stack , 4,5,6- packet trick . If the riffle stack qualifies as "Nothing... in the gambling sense..." Then I wonder what does ?! |

I guess I should have been more specific.
I don't see any of those routines having any sort of gambling feel to them. The Riffle and Faro stacks come the closest. Maybe if I watched their creators (Forte), I would appreciate them more. I was completely disapointed in the DVD's myself. Anyone wanna buy them?

Put em up in the lets make a deal section. You'll sell them or get something you like better in a trade. I actually enjoyed these DVD's quite a bit.

However , for anyone interested in gambling material that may potentially be of a different opinion : I would like to say that the material on these DVD's is geared towards gambling presentations . The fact that Kidcrenshaw didn't like them doesn't change that . I'm suprised to find out that riffle stacking and faro stacking only come close to having a "gambling feel about them" ....not to mention the Vernon poker deal or the McDougal stack or Paint poker . Please understand that I am not addressing your opinion of these DVD's ... that's your business ; but to say that the" Piacente DVD's offer nothing " in the way of gambling is inappropriate and untrue regardless of how you feel about Sal or his DVD's . |

The Alan Ackerman video's are quite good because they teach the moves and then give a practical idea or ideas in how to use the moves for magic. They are well worth you time and investment if you are into the false deals and how to use them for magic.

Jeff Wessmiller is a pretty good friend, so I have an obligation to recommend Weapons of a Card Shark. I've been through hell with the sales department at expertmagic, so try buying one directly from Jeff (he's a member here at the Café). Some people here at the Café will give terrible reviews of this product, but Jeff is a GREAT teacher, very clear, and has an amazing collection of sleights on this DVD. This is great for a beginner in gambling sleights, as I am also just starting gambling sleights. Jeff is attending college to become a casino surveilance operator/manage, so he really knows his stuff.
Fernando Keops' Cheating at Cards is well produced, but he's not the best teacher and there is limited information on the DVD (but deep info on bottoms, seconds, centers, and deck grip). Jason England has thrown together a pretty nice collection of decent gambling sleights, but I do not own his DVD, so you would have to talk to him about it. Hope this helps! ~Jonton

Criminal Justice. He's supposed to serve an internship with the Virginia Department of Charitable Gaming, then off to Las Vegas to pursue his Gaming Degree. He's going places...I roomed with him for close to 2 years. His brain works on a different level than the rest of us. He is clever and creative, and an excellent teacher. I did not have an interest in cheating moves etc.. when we met, but after living with him, I was immersed and actually learned some of the stuff. His DVD is not the end all work on the subject, but it is VERY informative, showcases great material, and I think is worth consideration to the the novice and intermediate technician alike. -END OF SHAMELESS PLUG-
All the best, Jonathan |
