What is your favourite Gambler And Magician routine?
I use the version Michael Ammar shows in ETLCM simply called "Gambler vs. Magician". I know he also does the version where the cards end face up in the deck. There is yet another routine in Larry Jennings' book "Up In Smoke and I know there is something called "Gambler vs. Mentalist vs. Magician". I don't know the handling though. Which one do you prefer? Cheers, Stig |

Mr. Lorayne's printed explanation and his taped performance of this routine are my favorites.

I have always enjoyed Title Bout by Martin Nash. It is taught in Ammar's ETMCM (vol. 3) I believe.

I work for a casino party company in the evenings, and on the nights I am dealing poker, there is one I use a lot .
It was originally the "How to Deal Yourself a Royal Flush" that I got from Ammar's ETMCM 1 . It was not originally a "Magi vs gambler" routine, but I changed it and sort of made it one, with a change of dialog , and by not dealing myself the 4 aces the 1st round, but then giving myself the Rf the next time. It always gets a good reaction from my hold 'em players, and several times, I have had people immediately pull out their wallet and toss me a tip afterwards. Thanks for starting this thread, as I need need to learn some more good ones, and want to see what other more experienced people use. MXRay |

I am partial to "Call of the Wild" by John Bannon. You don't end clean but if you present it well enough it shouldn't matter

I own call of the wild and it always get's good reactions. one of my favorites though is Ortiz's poker deal... I don't know if he normally passes it off as a gambler vs magician, but it involves a sort of colour change that you would see in a Magician vs. Gambler routine.
(You take the 4 aces out of the deck and have the backs signed. You lose them in an indifferent coloured deck and say that the aces will represent marked cards. Then you say you'll stack the deck so the aces fall to your hand, you do just that and show every ace as it falls to your hand. Turns out you dealt a straight flush to the guy across from you. What do you do? Turn your cards into a royal flush... backs signed and all). |

I second Harry Loraynes version. This is the trick that finally made me palm cards (Although it still scares me silly!) I find this trick a killer and like to end on it. He also has a great trick called 'The magician versus the four gamblers', I've got the performance on tape with no expanation and it fries the audience. One day I'll buy whichever book it's printed in but I'm trying to stop buying at the moment - too much material too little time!

"Magician vs. Gambler" is found in Mr. Lorayne's Personal Secrets and may be viewed on L&L's Vol. 3, "Best Ever" series.

You are quite correct isso, it is indeed 'card sharp and the four gamblers', kicker card trick.

I am privvy to Nash's routine. He basically does Vernons Matching The Cards and it works well.

"Magician vs Gambler vs Mentalist"? Can someone explain what differs this from "Magician vs Gambler"? How/why is the mentalist included?
Thanx, Stig |

It's "Gambler vs Mentalist vs Magician" and it's in Paul Harris "Art of Astonishment" vol #1. It's a nice 3 phase routine.

Yes, is so. Mr. Harris also says "...it's no big problem to distinguish between a gambler, a mentalist and a magician... ." I think that is not so, but is important to the excellent plot and work.

I would vote the matching up trick or a comedy of errors in the Dai Vernon Tribute to Nate Leipzig. Then the original one in the Harry Loryane book Personal Secrets.

Glenn,
I believe the "original" method was Doc Daley's. HL published his (easier) method in Personal Secrets. I am given to understand that the original Daley method used a couple of rather difficult palms. That said, I have to say that I've seen a number of variations of this over the years, including of course Mr. L's, Martin Nash's "Title Bout". the Harris GvsMvsM version and some unpublished works as well. My vote goes to Ammar's version from ETMCM. It's clear, with no fussy extra bits, and even though I know several versions of the effect Michael fooled me with his handling. |
