I learned from Chris Carter a powerful lessen for college shows. It's what he calls his second show of sorts...
I wont reveal it here, but it is powerful and makes lasting friends... Chris is at http://www.mindcramp.com if anyone wants to check out one of his shows. He does it every show! Even the theater ones... |

My smallest paid performance was 8 people for a seance show I occasionally perform. the largest so far was over 2300 for Woodward Governor's Christmas party. Needless to say, I didn't make it to every table at THAT show!!

Walk around at a large party is entirely different from a House Party Show. The House Party Show is more akin to the magician’s Parlor Magic Show. That is the House Party Show is more a stand-up small venue show. It’s your club show done in a living room, basement, clubroom, or the like.
For walk around there should be no set-up at all. Show up at the appointed time and start to work immediately. Then leave at the appointed time. No fuss, no mess, no bother. You do all your business building as you work. The House Party Show is a different animal altogether. Still, I don’t know what you do that requires a “set-up”. Explaining how you want the room arranged before you arrive should be made clear to the hosts. Your show (like a parlor magicians show) should be arranged in your case (if it’s that big and prop dependent). Most of my act fits is arranged in my pockets and fits on my person. I do carry a few props that are kept in a very elegant, leather briefcase. The props include an artists drawing pad, a spiral bound (side bound) note book, scissors, envelopes, and the box, bags, and products needed for Fogels “Bewitched Bottled & Bewildered” The case has been gaffed to accept an Owen’s Folding Base. It looks very elegant and upscale when assembled. It takes less than 30 seconds to screw the base into the case. The base is stable enough that the case remains in place (not fall over) when opened. The opened back acts as an easel for a couple of tricks. So my set-up is to walk into the room. Insure that it is arranged as per contract. Fasten the base to the brief case, open the case and start to perform. Any interaction prior to the show is pre-show work that I might be able to use. I typically do readings following the show (a BRS sort of thing). I don’t eat or drink while I am at the function.

The only setting up that I do before a home party is to open my bag.
Everything that I perform is ready to go out of the bag otherwise I avoid it. Yes I do mingle beforhand but in actuality it is per-show work. I have a reply form which I leave out during the show and I stick around to collect the same when I'm finished. If you do HWA then it's a good way to meet new clients. Best, Sebastian Black

Thanks guys this info has been very valuable. Ok here's another question, sorry for all of them! Is a chair prediction asking for too much space?

It all depends on the size of the area, and the type of routine.
For example, my LORD OF THE DANCE routine uses 5 chairs and I need 2 feet in front and behind the row. I've done it for a group as small as 25, but it plays well on stage. But it does take space, it may not play in a small, tight room. Tony |

I would do bank night at a small house party.
Check out Osterlinds ,..it is perfect for a small group. I've done chairs but only onstage and because I need to walk behind the chairs that would exclude it from most house parties and besides you would be hard pressed to find 4 available chairs to use 99 % of the time. I'd say try it but pack Bank Night as a back up. Best Sebastian Black

Well I would bring my own folding chairs to the venue and I would not need to walk behind them.
But if there is not enough room I will replace it with "The Third Choice" by Corinda, because I need a quick prediction effect that isn't that impressive (1 in 5 chance) to precede my add a number effect (1 in 2697 chance). I considered Bank Night but it is a little long I think.

Hmm I do usually Touching on Hoy and it doesn't involve nothing but three chairs with a small space between each.

Question 1: Stay a while- it's the best time for people to ask for a business card. I can't believe some people wouldn't
have one or 2 strong effects as well for close up. if someone asks then go into it. Question 2: 4 for me (and quite a shock that they paid my full price yaaaay!) Question 3: Each venue is different so you'll have to check with the party planner on size. Be crystal clea on your perfromance area needs you could say you need a space x foot by y foot but for private events where the person hasn't booked and event planner (like a home party) - it becomes too complicated for them. expect in these situations to perform surrounded Rhine sence is a mind reading of 1 in 5 ESP symbols and is easy you'll be able to do it in 5 seconds after opening the box- the pressntation can take you as long as you need but when you perform it you'll know staright away so you can concentrate on presentation |

I once did a "show" for 5 people. It was back when I was about 10 and was working for a daycare. Ended up not having many people show up because of some illness that came across the class so nobody was there that day. Show went fine though
Since then I've had a few cases where there isn't very many kids at a birthday party show. Turns out somebody else who's more popular has another birthday on the same day. That always sucks. Just gotta make the show extra special! |
