I received the Ickle Pickle Crystal Cube today. It will do what I need it to do, but three 18" silks is a pain to load. I'm also afraid that the mechanism is going to get damaged because of all the pressure.
I guess I will go with 6 momme silks instead of the 8 momme that I had planned to use. Do you all have any other tips to make loading easier or better? I don't like folding the silks because they stay that way, even after they are produced. Balling them up is more visual, but it is hard to get all three in the proper place. Other than this little problem, I do like it. The quality is good and it will enable me to make a production of silks that is very visual. Thanks to you guys for helping me decide on this item. Regan

Just a thought... Have you tried Zig Zag (accordian) folding them one atop the next? They may be more likely to pop open... sort of like spring flowers.

Michael,
That fold does works better than just a regular fold, but it still doesn't look as good as just wading them up in a ball. Three silks will easily fit by folding them this way though, and the one on top does 'spring' up a little....sometimes alot. The direction they are positioned is important. I experimented quite a bit with this fold and most of the time the silks (especially the last fold of the one on top will fly up to the top of the cube, but then quickly settles down. The cube looks to be about 1/3 filled at the production and the top silk is about all that shows. Also the silks still look, well...folded, as opposed to almost filling the cube entirely when the silks are just balled up. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll keep working with it. Regan

Another suggestion would be to focus on even distribution of wadded silks. They obvious must take up the exact same amount of space regardless of whether they are folded or not. It may just require a bit of extra detail time when loading.
Here is another possibilty. What may matter is the intended use of the silks after production. Diamond-cut silks take up far less space and should still appear to fill out the occupied space. Maybe only one or two of them a diamond? Let us know if you find a solution. ~michael

Diamond cuts would be a perfect solution, but not for this routine.
You are absolutely correct about distribution, but I cannot get 3 loaded without some protrusion to save my life. That is, unless I make the ball more compact and then it puts lot's of pressure on the release mechanism. I have an idea I am playing with. I may have to change the routine up a bit, but it will work better. What I'm thinking of is having one of the three silks in the cube visible at the start....open and remove it, then produce the other two. I may even use the first one to cover the cube and then make the production of the other two. What do you think? Regan

As long as it doesn't compromise your routine, that certainly works!

Does anyone know where I can see a demo of this prop? I tried using the link above that wmhegbli recommended, but for some reason the video link wouldn't work there for me.
Thanks for your input! |

I'm not sure. I think that link worked at one time.

Does anyone use the 4" size that is available? And, do you like how it handles versus the 6"? I know that the principle behind them is different and just want to know how people like the 4" version.
Thanks! |

I've never used a 4" Crystal Cube. I have played with an old, old 6" that worked on the same principle. It was much quiter than the spring loaded type. Naturally, the load chamber will be smaller on the 4".
I'm sure someone here at the Café has some experience with the smaller Crystal Cube and can give you better details than I can. Regan

Don't buy the 4" one. You won't be happy with it, the load chamber is much too small. Unless you want to produce a single silk, 18" or smaller. Regan: When you relase it, hold the top at an angle to the floor (not parallel to the floor), tilted slightly away from you, and then give a quick up/down shake. |

I purchased one of these recently and have been having a bit of trouble in the loading process. It seems no matter how I try to ball the silks up, they end up squirting around the sides of someplace they are not supposed to. Anyone have any tips or suggestions on loading that they can share?
Also, what do you guys do about the 'noise' that is created? This is much louder than I thought it would be and am not sure what to do to cover it. |

I always covered the noise by the slamming of the lid...open lid, close it and it sounds like the lid being closed...I've had one for years...the same one. Ickle Pickle.

We make a larger version that isn't spring loaded so it's nice and quiet. The difference with ours is it can be loaded while it is already in the set position.
