I would probably use TT. I'm not good at CTs yet.

Personally I wouldn't even use a TT. It is perfect center tear or nothing. I had the Thought Trans for awhile. At first I was in love with the thing. I then learned CT's (and other methods) and have never looked back. Something to consider with the TT is the fact that it looks like a gimick. In sunlight it is suspect at best. I was not comfortable with handing the TT to spec's. Not because they would find the secret, but because of the big bump on the back of it.

I have fooled sceptical magicians with TT, so the bump on the back - which they never really "see" even though it is out in the open, is not an issue for me.
One thing I don't do, is to hold it up still while reading it. It all happens in a movement. That said, a CT has the power of being so innocent, out of the open, with no device to deal with, that it is a favorite. But I still use the TT ocasionally for change of pace. Work with what works for you.

Osterlind's PCT or Acidus Novus (more often the latter) for me. Or occasionally my SUC.

For me, generally a peek. But it all depends on the presentation, if the presentation supports the writing down, then destroying the information, the CT is appropriate. If the presentation supports having a portable whiteboard in a plastic wallet, then the TT is appropriate. Additionally, you mast take into consideration the skill of the performer with each of these methods.

PCT, CT, Business Card peek, and on occasion a peek wallet.

Peek or a CT.
TT has too many limitations for me - lighting, potential for battery failure, accidental exposure. |

I still don't know why you get them to write something down only for you to tear it up

There are numerous solutions to that problem, but if you cannot come up with a reason, then do design duplication instead.

It also depends on the context of the effect
when I do the Underpants prediction from the bliss book I use the large cards for the first 4 and then I use a TT for the final The reason is---it's different from the large cards (different effect) also I Can't see thru your pants I can't see through the wallet (TT) so it works there but a Centre tear may not work--It depends on your presentation Normally however I stay away from the centre tear- the best CT I have researched is when you get it wrong and tear it up then later you reveal. I like the idea of the Centre tear--having nothing but pen & Paper and you can do the impossible---I prefer the Business card trick on the Ostiland DVD (vol 1) that he does with the watch routine---Just foling the card up and giving it back and then at the end you can open it to show just in case you have someone who may try and stuff you up- altho this is not normally the case- it does give you insurance but if you tear it up--you have none |

The Thought Transmitter loks like a prop and screams "Warning: Trickery Here." Who, other than a TT owner, carries around a vinyl case with a whiteboard in it? Not my cup of tea, obviously. I use a CT, and I'm about to start working on p**ks that don't involve tearing. (Both of Busch's volumes on the topic are winging their way to me by way of the USPS.) I think that p**k wallets can be wonderful, if used properly. I've seen, but don't own, the SUC, which looks unsuspicious and is very ingenious. I own the Insight wallet, but I have much the same problem with it that I do with the TT: it looks like a prop. Many people have said to me, "What the heck kind of wallet is that?" The one use I've found for it is for doing Paul Harris's "Anything Deck." I keep the extra cards that go under the case in the wallet, which at least creates motivation for taking it out in the first place, then have the spectator write down his or her word, rather than tell it to me, using the wallet to get a p**k at the word, before putting it away and continuing with the routine. This allows me to, at the end, hand the spectator the cards, and say, "Now, for the first time, tell us the word that you've been thinking of," before he or she deals down the cards to see it spelled out on their backs. Usually, by this time, the spectator has forgotten about the wallet.

Just take it off them and tear it up. There doesn't need to be a justification. I'd be more concerned with using a pack of cards to find a page in a book test than taking back a slip and tearing it up.

One of the initial reasons to tear up a billet (aside from it being necessary to get the information)was to facilitate its burning. A person would write down a question, word, or what-have-you, and it would be destroyed, the mentalist would hold his hand above the rising smoke and reveal the information. That was the justification. Today, that cannot be done in most performing environments. The CT should not be done unless you can justify the writing down of information and its destruction.
Here is the only real justification I have been able to come up with: Justification of the writing: Write down the .... in clear block letters, now look at the writing on the card see it as an image, burn it into your mind. For the destruction: Now I want you to project that image to me, we will get rid of this so as not to have it accidentally exposed... Putting the peices in an empty soda can takes care of the rest. Personally, I prefer the peek. The justification is the same as above with the added caveat, "in case someone else has to read it" This makes sure that it is neat, and justifies why it is written. I sometimes justifies why I take the card and hand it to someone else. Tony |

A while back, Larry Becker tipped a nice ploy he uses for justifying tearing up of a billet.
