As a magic enthusiast I have often considered building my own illusion just for the fun. Storage of coure could be a problem. If you only could have one what would it be?

Metamorphosis (substitution trunk). The closer for all my illusion shows. It has everything I want in an illusion. It amazes people. It can be done surrounded and it's very visual. The only bad angle is from above. (Not to mention it doesn't cost too much.)
I'm sure some will argue that it's been done too much but the truth is only knowledgeable audiences have seen it a lot. By that, I mean magicians, entertainment agents, show producers and cruise lines entertainment directors. To the general public that only sees a magician once in a while, it's still fantastic. I would have to agree with Michael on this one. Not only is it not terribly pricey, but it's great fun to see and perform and gets great reactions. And when you're not using it, you can use it for storage haha.
As always, and this is one of the best examples of this....Practice...Practice...Practice. Matt |

One good thing with a sub trunk is that it IS a storage container too, if it is built solidly. Mind you not the thing you want to carry heavy stuff on bad roads but you can stick stuff in it when not using it.

Gee we all think a lot of the same things. Have you guys ever seen the one Penn and Teller use? Its not a true Sub trunk but a escape like Houdini's Milk can.

The Sub Trunk is great, but ... I'd go with headchopper because it meets the above criteria (angle proof, very visual), plus it gets a ton of laughs. But, more importantly, it's an illusion that requires no assistant other than the one you get from the audience.
If you have no problem with the ball-and-chain of an assistant, I'd go with Zig Zag. The main reason this beats the Sub Trunk for me is that you can do it with relatively little practice time. If you KNOW you'll work time and again with the same girl, I have no problem with the Sub Trunk; but it does require more training for the assistant, so I think the Zig Zag is more versatile. |

As a magic enthusiast as well I had considered building a zig zag and even went as far as buying the Osbourne plans for it. I have a background in engineering so I don't think it would have been too difficult.
Plus, it's such a recognizable prop that just screams magic. It could easily fit in the corner of the living room. |

I used to have an old floating carpet modified as a coffee table. It was great fun to watch guests sit there and stare at the floating table.

I agree that the subtrunk is a great effect, but my version is very angley (involves multiple people and appearing in the audience or balcony). I would have to say my Mini-Kub is one of my favorites. It is angle proof, fits through doorways and is an all around great effect.

I'd love to see that Chris!
If I could have only ONE Illusion, it'd be the Origami! Beautiful Illusion...

Aaaaaaaaah go with a sub trunk, you can't beat a Houdini style classic. There's a reason why its a classic and why everyone is still doing it.

I think you guys are making some good choices!
The elevator would be low on my list because I do stage magic shows maybe 10% of the time. An elevator would not go over in the typical banquet setting. Matt, build the Zig Zag ... you can't go wrong. |

Zig-Zag and Sub Trunk seem to be popular choices... and rightfully so for all the above-mentioned reasons. I have both and they are both terrific.
But since the original question did not specify practicality as a condition... I would choose Doug Henning's Fountain Levitation. It's always been my favorite illusion to watch. Ah, if only the rights were available... |

No, it didn't specify practicality, but I think that we all have to make our selection based on what really works for us (although that fountain levitation WAS a treat to watch!)
So, if I may be so bold, how about if we categorize it: our ULTIMATE, no-holds-barred favorite, and our the-trick-I-really-think-I'd-get-a-lot-of-use-out-of favorite? For real use, I still like the Zig Zag (although I'm now thinking of "Audience Acupuncture" and Steinmeyer's "Cutting and Audience Member in Halves" -- not the real name, but close enough!) For the ultimate (assuming I could suddenly perform like David Copperfield) I think I'd go with DC's Buzz Sawing. |

Starrpower,
I agree, I would definately choose my Zig-Zag illusion. Like others said before, it is indeed a classic for a reason. As far as my ultimate favorite...I don't know, but I might say as far as an available piece of magic, an Asrah Levitation. Or some of the crazy signature stuff Copperfield did like "Portal" Thanks, Beau
