I just started doing kid shows and I'm doing a show for my brothers 4th grade class to try and get some publicity. I would greatly appreciate it any of you had ideas on how to market magic shows?

Here it comes...only a few hours after your original post...
#1. Read all of the marketing ideas in the INDEX POST which is always the 2nd post down from the top in this kid's section. #2. Have a GREAT show - I can't stress this enough...you can spend 1/4 of a million dollars in 20 years of advertising and never "make it". But with an AWESOME show, you will get more business than you ever imagine. #3. Word of mouth...start letting your friends and neighbors know that you are an entertainer, see if they will use you for their kid's parties. (but don't rely on it) #4. There is very minimal success in doing FREE shows in hopes of getting more business, if they suspect you are free they will soon wonder: why SHOULD THEY pay you? #5. Get a good, affordable website (check out http://www.atlantamagician.com), business cards (check out http://www.vistaprint.com some free designs too), advertise in your yellow pages, your local parenting magazines, school calanders, school newspapers, etc, etc, etc. #6. Did I mention, have a GREAT show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sucky shows are a dime a dozen. Good luck friend! |

Palmern,
AFTER I gave you the above advice, you added an avatar to your user and now I see that you are an aging: "magician-in-the-making" ! For that reason, I have totally different advice for you and you can please ignore my first post: #1. Do FREE shows until a respected entertainer tells you to charge #2. Join a magic club if possible and LEARN! #3. Have fun with it, the business side will come later, and will likely make you forget the reason you loved magic in the first place. #4. Keep that smile #5. Read the INDEX post I was telling you about Good luck friend! |

Its funny how word of mouth advertises better than anything since I am guessing you are still in school start preforming close up like crazy. then when you are done tell your audience that you do kid shows and birthdays. If you were good then kids will start to talk and word of mouths a funny thing because kids make what you actually do seem so much cooler than it was. they will build you up like a god then you look really good when they go home and tell there parents how good you were. The same works for adults, when people talk about you its usually better than you actually were.

Thanks Al, I am new here, but have been performing for quite some years. I am hoping to help others out and learn at the same time.
When we take the time to help or teach others, we inevitably improve our own act. |
