Friends, I perform exclusively for children and family events, thus the following question: are any US magicians using the stage name "Tricky Ricky"? A Google search found many in the UK, but only one--and a clown at that--in the US. I ask because I intend to use the name but don't want to step on anyone's toes.
Thanks in advance. Rick |

There's a chap in Toronto, Richard Lyn, who uses that handle. Try typing 'Tricky Ricky' into the Café search engine.

Hi Rick,
Richard Lyn has been Tricky Ricky for probably close to 30 years. He is a full time pro who is extremely popular, especially for children's shows. He has been called the "Busiest Magician in Canada" at times. One of his signature pieces is his rabbit Lucy which he has trained to do various tricks. Hi avatar shows Lucy performing. (There have been a number of Lucys over the years.) He is a regular here at the Café and you can e mail him at trickyrickymagic@rogers.com All the best, Rob |

Rob,
I was going to mention Richard Lyn also. In fact, when I saw the title of this topic, I thought it was going to be about him. Richard is a great guy too! Regan

Too bad Rick....'cause that is a good choice because it is an extension of your real name. Choosing a stage name is a tough process. Having the same stage name as someone else could cause lot's of problems. In todays 'small' world, even 2 magicians that live on different continents could cause major confusion with the same stage name.

It is funny how my wife and I came up with our stage name for what we do. It more or less was handed to us. When we were dating, evey time we went out some place and people would ask us our names for reservations etc., we always said Kyle and Kelly. This was usually followed by a subtle laugh and a nice smile.
For whatever reason, people just loved the sound of the words Kyle and kelly. It was almost as if the saying of the phrase sounded neat and rolled off the tongue. I am notreally sure but we constantly got that remark and reaction and stilldo to this day. In fact, once at a murder mystery diner, they were announcing anniversaries and b-days to have everyone appluade. The lady looked at our names on the paper and said something like, " oh wow this next couple is simply adorable... please give a round of applause to Kyle and kelly celebrating their anniversary today". it was funny that she stopped and said that but didn't to anyone else. Well to make a long story longer, We decided that the names Kyle and kelly were something we just had to use. It has been a part of who we are and how we market ourselves ever since.. and hence "The Magical Illusions of Kyle and Kelly" was born. Finding a name is never a really easy process, but it does need to be memorable, easy to recall and help brand you. Regan is also right in that you want to be sure it is not confused by someoneelse of the same name. I can not tell you how many Magic Mikes I know just in my area alone. Kyle

Kyle,
You better be glad it 'rolls' off the tongue. If Kelly ever wants to put hers in front you have a good excuse to keep yours first. :) Just kiddin'! Kyle and Kelly does sound cool! Regan

Well they have referred to us as Kelly and Kyle from time to time. She is my partner on stage and off so it wouldn't matter ot me. hehe In fact, the clients always come to her first whenever payment is to be made. I guess they know who the boss really is huh? =)

It is so funny because I personally handle all the cleint contacts, the marketing and everything with the client. but every time it comes to paying, they go directly to Kelly. It has become so comical we both just look at each other and laugh. They do indeed know whois the boss. then again, I would not have it any other way. Kelly is my partner on stage and the show would not be the same without her.

I know a tricky ricky in Chicago as well. I would pick a name you would be happy with for a long time. It is hard to get away from a name if you've had it for years. Also what if you wanted to go into adult magic. The name Tricky would make you sound like a kiddy magician. Not that there is anything wrong with that it might hinder you when trying to work for adults or in the business world.

Hi:
Tricky Ricky must be pretty common; I've seen a Tricky Ricky advertising in one of parents' magazines in my area. Ron |

I've decided to use something OTHER than Tricky Ricky (I've always hated being caled "Ricky" anyway!). My own name is plenty good enough!
