The name is "The Book of Thoth" - very cool... you can get it from H&R books
By the way - if anyone ever finds a source for Minch's "Lovecraftian Ceremonies" (or is so tired of theirs they want to trade it etc) - PM me... Yeah..Minch's stuff is great...I'm trying to collect it all

Didn't I hear a story about Minch where a bizarrist once met him at his (Minch's) house, and when he told Stephen Minch that he loved his books and was, in fact, a working bizarrist, Minch said, "You actually do that stuff ?!?!? "
If true, that knocks him down a few pegs for me - another "theoretical bizarrist" theorist .. (If false, than what can I say other than, "Yay" )

Mystican,
Actually, I believe you are referring to my story. I met Mr. Minch at a lecture and he did indeed make that comment. I think it is important to realize the context of that situation. We were telling him about our Theatre Macabre run (the lecture happened to be in the same shopping center) and I think his surprise was more that we were doing bizarre magic on a professional level than that we were doing it at all. It should also be noted that he praised us for doing so and said that all too few people were. I don't know anything about Mr. Minch as a performer as I have never had the opportunity to see him perform, nor have I heard reviews of his performances. As an author though, he is wonderful. Lovecraftian Ceremonies was one of the first three books I read on the bizarre and certainly helped set the direction for my own performances. Don't let my story "knock him down a few pegs" because I think his statement was more a commentary on the current state of the art than it was placing himself in the camp of the "theoretical bizarrist." Just wanted to clear that up, since I have a great deal of respect for Mr. Minch and wouldn't want my name dropping to lower anyone's opinion of him.... Dave |

Well - of the books I have of Minch - they seem to come more from practical experience vs the pipe-dream type.. one can tell as soona s one tries the effects - as opposed to some that are down right impractical from some other well known bizarrists (and I tried them anyway...) at least the theoreticians are inspirational to force us to make the ideas practical!!!
(Hey Dave - if you ever want to part with the LC book - PM me!!!! Ia! Ia!)....

Dave, I started thinking after I posted that, that I thought maybe it was someone I "knew", as opposed to just "some bizarrist", so, lol, that was you !
I thought though, it was at his house.. ? oh well, there go more brain cells I guess I'm glad to hear the "full" story ! Lovecraftian Ceremonies has always been high on my list of classic bizarrist tomes to acquire, along with Compleat Invocation (all volumes) and a few others, especially Eugenes'.

Better than that -- visit real haunted sites, read books. Get off the web and get into a library. Visit museums. Travel. Meet real people. Don't just parrot internet junk. The web is a great resource, but about 95% of the information on it is not worth a dime. Quote:
Good luck selling this. You will have to be very convincing to make anyone believe it.

Haha, I love it.
If you aren't convincing then you aren't doing very good magic anyway. I hope you try to be convincing in all of your performances. Many many magicians use ghost story lines and people love them. Asking the local spirit to reveal the card and then the card turns over with IT is pretty convincing. Also, with spirits and such 'less is more.' The internet is a great source for patter. It is the biggest encyclopedia that we have access too. New age, occult, ghost, psychic, science, religion.....the number of subjects that information could be obtained off of the internet is limitless (give or take one or two topics) Among others, I found a great true story about the only man convicted of a ghost on the internet. (The jury believed that person who had testified seeing the ghost.) Tons of great patter ideas on the internet. Go to the Gene Poinc site before you buy his books. To a beginner I don't suggest blindly buying books, when Gene has given us samples of his type of work. If his style and thinking works for you, then by all means buy his effects. Gene has passed on, bless his soul, but he speaks to us on his website. It would be a waste of time and money to go to a bunch of haunted houses. They have more to do with jumping out and scaring people. in my opinion, magic takes place much more in the mind. Most haunted houses are not created by magicians. Bill, all due respect, I find it odd that a person who dresses as a stereotypical wizard uses the term 'parroting'. I love character magicians, but to me, that itself is parroting. |
