I'm thinking about buying a Breakaway Wand but I don't want the person who holds the wand to feel bad. Any tips of preventing this?

Simple.. have it happen to you. The child has the wand and it works just fine. When you take the wand from him/her (as you look away to get something)the wand falls apart. This now plays in two ways. It is funny because the magician is in trouble with a broken wand and also plays on the classic "they see but you do not see" scenario. You get maximum laughs and it empowers the child at the same time because he or she made the magic happen but you could not.

Right on Kyle.I used to do it that way,but I lost the insert. So now I hand the wand to the child and after it goes limp,I profusely apologize, and say that it's my fault.I do this several times. It gets the laughs and I take the heat.I finally hand the child a legit wand.Best.

You are most welcome. A lot of folks forget about the fact that it comes with the extra part, or fail to use it. This way it can act as a standard wand or you can have it break any time in the show or routine.

There are some versions of this prop that do not come with the extra piece. I had an inexpensive version that had the piece, and a more expensive (really high quality) version that didn't have the piece. Just thought you should be aware.

Donald,
Is the "really high quality" one you're speaking of worth the extra dough? Is it the one that is sold by Hank Lee's? Regan

I used to worry about the wand breaking on the helper, but now I don't. It get a great reaction. I do say "It is not your fault" then on the second time I say " I never could get that wand to work"
Nothing of the same will bring any change, take action today!

I also get great reactions when ever I use it. See my promo clip to see it being used, the kids know its going to happen and still laugh just as much.

Yea I hand it to my helper and have it fall apart when they are holding it.............but I pay close attention to the way they react, if they laugh then its fine I make it happen 2 more times in there hands! if they look worried or scared I take it back and say oh I am so sorry I forgot to tell you when you hold a wand you need to hold the white part really tight, I have an extra one no problem let me get it(reach into table and straighten same wand) so you need to hold the white part real tight like this(grab the white part with my other hand and it falls apart, of course over exagerate the reaction!
there has been a lot of discussion on not making your helper feel bad and things like the wand falling apart should only fall apart for the magician etc. I think if you handle it right it is fine for it to fall apart for your helper it all depends on how you react to it, I act way over surprised and when I lean down to my helper I give them a smile and a wink......15 years and have never had a child cry or get upsett about the wand falling apart because I let them know it is supposed to happen.......plus I am a big goofball and they love that!

I've seen the ad at Hank Lee for the real expensive wand ($35.00 or so), but the Viking Wand is very good too...and about $15.00. The sections fit together nice and straight, unlike the real cheap versions where the wand looks real crooked.
Another option with the helper: Act as though the helper is breaking it on purpose, and playing a trick on you. I think I started playing it this way when I saw Docc Hilford do it on that way on his "20 Minutes with a Balloon" tape. The helper really seems to enjoy playing a prank on the magician, and the audience loves it too. Ron |

Thank-you all for your help!
Donald- Thanks for the heads up on that! Ron- Does the Viking wand come with "the extra piece"? |

My character is clownish (minus the greasepaint) and the kids know everything is in fun. When the wand breaks, I act shocked, take it from the child and, holding the middle of the wand with my index finger and thumb, press it under my nose to look like a Fu Manchu moustache. The kids laugh because THE JOKE'S ON ME!

I can't quite recall where I got my quality one from. It might possibly have been David Ginn many, many years ago. The string is thicker (more durable), and the breaks are more invisible when extended, and the wand is straight. I have preferred using it.
I tried something the other day, which Andy Walker recommended I try, leading into it's use, and was really pleased with the idea. Thanks, Andy! - Donald
