All taping, all the time. Anyone, any show, any recording device. What do I care? I guess it could backfire if I hurt someone and the tape is now used for a lawsuit, but barring that, I do a fantastic show and I see no harm that can come from people have a recording of it.

I've no problem with it. I quite often hear that some children insist on watching the video again and again. They know some of my routines better than me and will often even remind me of jokes I'd forgotten about myself!
The one that makes me laugh is when a mum with a camera decides she wants to capture the children's reactions to the show and danders into centre stage, then wonders why they've all stopped laughing and pointing and have started looking at her with wee confused faces. |

I generally don't mind having a parent videotaping. Recently I did a birthday and the parent either hired someone or it was a family friend. This person had a large camera with the brightest light that I have seen. It was brighter than any stage lights I have been in front of. If I looked towards the camera I could barely see the kids 3 feet away.

First of all, I doubt Mr. Jelly is serious about entertaining children. (I hope).
But if you’re trying to make a point, I think it goes without saying that if your act stinks no amount of publicity will help you.

I'm not too sure, Ken. Some acts are so bad that they are good! That seems to be an appeal for some reason. Tiny Tim, The Del Rub[o Triplets, and K-Mar the Discount magician come to mind. And how about that guy who was on American Idol a few years back? William Hung? I am sure we could think of many more if we cared to.
Of course, most of us do NOT want success for that reason! But bringing this back on topic, no, I suppose of you have a bad act you would not want a record of it, but I don't think that really enters into the equation with this discussion. As for lights, I think that is a isolated incident, too. Most video cameras today have good enough capabilities that they do not need anything more than natural room lighting. I have not seen a home camera with auxiliary lighting in years. |

The recording will help with publicity especially if they put you on Youtube and other video media sites.

People videotaping my Show? It used to really bother me. I thought, what happens if they have a friend who is a Magician or wants to try to steal your act. I used to tell people no. However, as I have increased my fees and have more experience, I have found that it is more of a bother to get into a discussion at the gig telling the videographer what you can and cannot videotape or to not videotape. I do not like it but I do not want it to hurt the feelings of anyone and also be a distraction for me and my Show. So I just let it go. A lot of my Magic Props cannot be purchased and are not made anymore. So even if the tape was shown to a Magician, he or she could not copy my Show. Also I have had a few people tell me they called because they saw a tape of me performing at a Party. So that is my view on the subject. Jut have fun and do a good show! Cheers!
