I just wanted some people to weigh in on how to dress while performing strolling card magic lets say at a cocktail hour for a Bar Mitzvah or wedding?
Does one have to wear something to make them stand out such as a bright colored suit or tie? I kind of like the more conservative approach of a business suit but, as I can see, some would never know you were providing entertainment.

I did witness one bad incident whereby the magician had a really flashy sports coat on with a tie with a flashing button. I saw the magician stroll over to one of the CEO's at the party when the gentlemen told the magician to get away from him and stay away. He then turned and said "freak." I can only assume he felt that way from the outfit since he just started to do magic.
Any other stories like this?

This should be in the "What We Wear" thread. You may get more help there.
Anyways, why would the CEO do that? What did he think the magician was going to do, or who he was? My recommendation is this: don't wear anything too flashy, but you don't want to look like a normal person at the party. UNLESS everyone there is dresses nice, then don't over do it. But I say get a black sport coat, or vest with pockets big enough to fit everything in. This is what I wear. Black dress pants, black long sleeved dress shirt, and a red tie. Not really bright red, but a darker, more "calm" red. And right now I am looking for a black vest with pockets on both sides, and hopefully the inside. It is really hard to find nice clothes for a 14 year old. It is either for adults, or really young kids. I WAS looking for a sport jacket, but I find the shoulders are very big and bulky. But maybe if I find one that will fit me that will be better. But that's what I would do. Not too flashy, but not too casual. And whatever you do, don't wear a tophat, gloves, and don't bring a cane with you. (Unless you need one.) It depends on your style, and enviroment, and I PERSONALLY don't think a tophat would do YOU good in that enviroment. But, its up to you. Anyway, good luck. -Cory.

Actualy, the industry standard has always been one step higher than the average guests. If it's casual, you want Coat and tie, if it's coat and tie, you want tux, if it's tux, you want tails, etc. The exception to this would of course be themed. If a party is themed, you want to dress to fit the character you portray in the theme.

When I'm doing this I would walk around wearing either blue shorts or jeans and a black tshirt or turtle neck

I would venture a guess that CEO was not interested in anything you had to say without an appointment. Was it an ENRON, or a Worldcom party? That Jeff Skilling, Dennis Kozloskie, and Bernie Ebbers are such big kidders.
