Test two shows and keep up with all the results, etc, etc. Donald, you need an aspirin for sure now.
Yes, it should be Fun for all. Regardless of how you do it, if it turns out fun for all, then it was a winner. I sometimes have people remind me that I did a show for them 20–25 years ago at their birthday party. Just having a magic show at your party is special to most. They don’t forget it. Of course they do remember their own party longer than they will someone else’s. So it is important to make the birthday child feel special. Somebody once said, If it’s a bad show, they remember it as a magic show. If it’s a great show, they remember who did it. Tom

I have only respect for David and feel somewhat unworthy to comment on something that obviously works for him. However, I will jump in with my opinion.
I use several different children as volunteers during the course of the show. I use the birthday child (or I let them choose someone if they are shy) for a special trick at the end. I find that using more than one volunteer makes the show more interesting and gives it more contrast. I could see using the birthday child for several routines to get somewhat monotonous. What if the birthday child is self-centered and not particularly pleasant?(it happens). Then you could be in for a loooooong show. It seems that a birthday show can make the birthday child feel plenty special and make the other kids feel special too. I would rather have several kids go home excited about having helped the magician, on stage. And I have never gotten feedback from parents that implies that I should have used only their child. My final problem with this concept is that my bias is that American society, in general, overindulges children. I can't speak to how it is up there north of the border. I am against buying into the concept that just because the birthday child's mom is writing me the check, that I have to make her child the absolute center of attention. That's just me and my thoughts, I sure hope I haven't offended anyone. |
