Paul Gertner in his book Steel and Silver, discusses some applications of "the flick" in brief, a coin is flicked with the right thumb under cover of the left hand.
the move has many applications, and I personally love it a lot. I published around a year ago a copper silver transpo effect using the flick in coinmagic.com I was wondering if other fellow magicians liked the move as much as I do, and are willing to share their thoughts on it... regards, Nir |

David Neighbors has routines that uses it, Bob Kohler's C/S/B (without CSB gaffs) from his Kohler Tap notes uses it, there are some Matrix type effects that use it to kick a coin under cards.

Jason Alfords "spare change" uses it, which is a cardless 4 coin matrix with backfire...

Sorry Curtis, I have found that sleight to be very unreliable in practical use.
It is usually preceeded by the "roll" move, and after what usually is a few failed "flick" moves, I resport to the "wipe". Though I have noticed the "flick" works a bit better in more arid regions like out in Vegas where the desert air is so dry. |

I perform Kohler's Copper/Silver/Brass, and therefore use the flick here. This is a brilliant way of making the effect gaffed...Yet clean!
I also perform the trick from Steel and Silver using the card case and coin (sorry I have forgotten it's name)...This is a great application of the flick and covers the move perfectly. Lastly although not really a new application for the flick, I thought I would share with you a routine idea I have had, as a continuation of "Copper Silver Tranposition"... Having said that you are going to make the effect more clear, you take out a pen and write the letter "S" for silver on one hand. You perform the routine again, and then when you lift your hands the copper coin has now switched places to be under the hand with the "S" on it. You say that this is impossible because Copper does not begin with S it begins with C. You lift your hand and now there is a "C" in the place of the "S". You carry covering the two coins again, and say that the "C" is often mistaken to stand for Chinese, and when you lift your hands there are two Chinese coins! This is basically the original Copper Silver Transposition, followed by Reed McClintock's Stars and Hexes gimmick, and then finished using the "Trip to China Town" ending for the Gertner routine. I mentioned this to Reed and he said that it would work...Any other feed back, positive or negative? Owen |

I believe Joe Givan used this in a routine during a recent lecture here in Kansas City.

Why, that's important info right there.
And can you imagine the misdirection involved to make sure the wife/girlfriend doesn't catch you? That alone should gets some props... |

Scotty York's Chink-a-Chink with bottle caps arranged in a diamond pattern uses the move at the very end.

Yes, I suppose we should get back to Nir's original post....
One early handling of my Coercive Purse routine used the Flick. Coins were appearing and disappearing from a purse frame, and for one sequence, the frame was left on the table, open. Under the cover of an effect occurring at the other side of the table, I flicked a coin into the frame. The effect was that the coin appeared "inside" the frame all on its own. A much more elegant approach is Larry Jennings' routine in Richard's Almanac in which three coins penetrate up through the table to arrive under a folded hankerchief. Kaufman likens the misdirection to Slydini's. Scotty York's "Chink-a-Chink" routine utilized the move for the last transit. And, if you ever run into Kainoa Harbottle, ask him about the "pendulum kick vanish". It is the weirdest application of the Flick I know of.

I don't currently have Stars and Hexes, although Reed assures me that it would work...
I hope to get it some time soon when I have some money! Owen |

Dan Huffman used the flick(or kick, or something along the same lines)for an absolutely stunning penetration of a coin through a shot glass...could have been Richard Bartram Jr.'s move though...either way, wonderful.

Kohler has a brilliant One coin, One card style effect with the flick (his variation)...It can be found on his video from International Magic's Convention...and can be bought from http://www.internationalmagic.com (their site is currently down though...should be back up soon).
A card is fairly turned over on the table, the magician clearly shows that there are no coins under it. He also shows that his hand have no extra coins hidden in them. He picks up a coin from the table, and makes it disappear. A spectator is told to turn over the card and underneath is found the coin!!! Owen |

I use the kick in a shadow coins variation, it works great. The setup is the coins not in a square, but in a diamond, and you kick or "flick" the bottom coin ( the one nearest to you, the performer). What also works is kicking the coin backward, using the thumb, or middle finger. You cover the kicking hand with your opposite hand and say " now like before, we are covering this coin," and wile your pointing your hand at the covered coin, you kick the coin under the pointing hand, and then you drag the coin to where the coin is supposed to reappear. I hope that made sense. Rmax
