What are some cool things you know of that one could put in their jacket for coin work? My sister is a professional seamstress, so for Christmas she is making me a jacket with the features that I tell her. I have already asked her to put a sleeve pocket in (you know that thing in Bobo's). So what else is there? Thank you.

How about something in the arm of the sleeve to hold a magnet?
I met a magician who had his outside breast pocket attached to the side pocket via a tube of cloth - hidden in the lining, of course - so anything he ditched in the breast pocket would slide down into the side pocket. How about a topit? |

The slide is out of Bobo's too. A topit is a great idea, one on each side. How about multiple pockets in your breast pocket? (see Kurtz's videos)
If she will hook up your pants too, try a slide that leads to your sock. Or a tunnel between your two pants pockets. That's awesome that she will do that for you. Maybe find a specific pattern of material that you like and have her make a vest out of it. That way you have a one of a kind vest. Just a thought, I tend to wear vests more than jackets. Corey B. |

Well you should start with a topit! There is a coins to pocket in Bobo's that uses a cloth tube from the breast pocket to outside coat pocket! (it's in the book you can look it up!)
A 3 & 1/4" pocket, in each outside coat pocket for a 3 inch. coin! (near the top so you can reach it with a cross arm steal.) On the outher side from the topit a 5 1/2" pocket for a 5 in. coin or a wine glass! You can split and sew the lining at the bottom of the coat so coin clips don't show when you open your coat! I would double the lining at the bottom of the coat so clips don't tear out when you make a steal! A breast pocket on both sides of the coat (One will be for the coins to pocket!) I would say 4 in. by 4 in. for the breast pockets and 6 in. by 6 in. for the outside coat pockets so you can reach in or make drop offs easily 2 or 3 inside pockets for stuff (hanks, coins purses, deck of cards, other stuff! That's all I can think of right now! I have had pockets put in coats and vests for the last 20 years, it's great to walk up to tables with nothing in your hands and be ready all the time just by having your coat on! Ok good luck and have a good time! Best, David Neighbors The Coinjurer |

What about connecting the outer breast pocket with the inner breast pocket? That way you could vanish something via a handkerchief vanish and yet retrieve it from the inner breast pocket.
Just an idea. Corey B. |

She's going to install a zipper in the bottom of the breast pocket, so that if I want a coin to stay there I can just zip it up. Regarding topits, where can I get a good pattern for one? I know Michael Ammar has one on sale at his website, but is it a very good one? Thank you! |

All things considered, one of the most useful things I ever saw anyone do to his coat was to make a small, long addition to the inside of his outer breast pocket. This allowed him to keep his magic wand there. Without this pocket, it's tough to find a spot for a decent sized wand that doesn't wreck the line of the suit..
Michael Ammar gives some good advice for tailoring along with the Topit pattern in his Topit Book. The patttern is reduced in the book, I think, but your expert seamstress should have no problem. After that, how's about adjustable lapels, so the suit never goes out of style? Or sleeves attached by velcro, for the ultimate heckler stopper?

I just recently picked up a jacket from the local Goodwill and I got a heck of a deal.
It is a BRAND NEW jacket and was only $5. The jacket it self has 7 pockets. I am going to be getting a topit inside, possibly 2. David Neighrs posted up some good advice above! I would have never thought of putting a 3 1/4" pocket in for jumbo coins! Chris |

I like the idea for a wand pocket- I'll have to try that out. I've been thinking along these lines, too, and these are all great suggestions. Thanks!

When you buy Ammar's topit, it comes with the pattern just like a McCall's sewing pattern-the seamstress/tailor will have all the info she needs.

If any of you own a Raven, I'll bet you've got some ideas...that's the only thing I have in my jacket, but my pinstriped, dark blue vest has a mini-topit built in.

Recently, I got that jacket tailored with topits and other stuff called "The Works" by the famous magic seamstress that tours with J. Scott Berry. I can't remember her name. Apparently she's the best. She really does know what she's doing. If anyone cares, I'll find her website. Frank

Maybe you could build a hold out into the coat?

These are terrific suggestions for the coat. And timely as I was planning on doing something like this soon. Thank you!
I hope you will please expand the discussion to pants. I am so happy that the double inside pocket is widely available now in cheap and expensive pants. I always look for that feature in formal, casual, long and short pants. Would it be practical to have a zippered slide connecting the hip pocket of the coat to the pants pocket beneath? I am thinking too of having a funnel above this zipper. That way, the slide that connects my coat’s breast pocket to the hip pocket could be used to either leave things there or (during the act of retrieving something) be converted to a slide all the way from the breast to the pants pocket. Carl Cloutier's "Cards to Slimfast" shows a useful (and comedic) connection between right and left pants pockets. He also uses a connection between one pants pocket and sock. I think this allows a fantastic reappearance in ‘an impossible location’, but I suspect the tailoring is demanding in regard to shape, tautness, and type of material for the slide (material type is more critical for a card than a heavy round coin). I have been unsuccessful searching for a commercially available pattern. Does anyone sell the pants-to-sock pattern or offer it in a book? Thanks again!
