The Vernal Equinox this year will occur on March 20, 2006 at 1:26 pm EST, or 1826 UTC. At this time, and this time only you will be able to balance an egg on end. If you want to know why ask a physics professor. Every year when I try it my wife laughs at me, but I recommend trying it. (Providing you live in the northern hemisphere.

I think the correct phrasing is: "At this time it is possible to balance an egg on end." since that is absolutely true.

I can't tell you how embarrassed I am having my English corrected by a Swede.

Hey Al! I have to say that I am sorry to contradict you, but standing an egg on its end actually quite easy to do on any given day of the year. I just spent a very fruitfull 35 minutes getting one to stand on its large end (OK, the word easy is obviously out of place here... ;-) )... My wife was amazed to see that I would spend 35 minutes to do this (again, the word "amazed" might not be the right one to use...).

Anyway, here are some further links of interest for this situation:

This is exciting stuff for me. Try it again on March 20, 2006 at 1:26 pm EST, and you will once again impress your wife by balancing a dozen effortlessly. Let's all meet back here March 21, 2006 and compare notes and I will tell you my wife's reaction when I tried balancing a dozen on the kitchen counter.

The reason why Tomas's phrasing is correct is that it is also possible to balance an egg on end at other times during the year. Tomas was correcting Al's statement

Hey Al!

I understand that this is fun for you... It is fun for me too! I am up to a dozen eggs! Yesterday evening my daughter walked in the kitchen, looked at the eggs, turned and growled "Mom! Dad is playing with the eggs again!". I have to get a life!

You're a magician! It's far too late to get a life!

This reminds me of a guy in Africa who made plenty of money off of tourists. For a small fee, you went into his tent, which sat on the equator.

He had a pan of water, which he would drain in the northern hemisphere, pull out a plug, and it would drain counterclockwise. He would then re-plug it, fill it up with water, and perform the same demonstration on the other side of the tent (in the southern hemisphere), and the water would drain clockwise.

This guy seemed to be doing quite well for himself with the tourist money he was making. Sure, it's a scam, but he sent people away happy, and they didn't feel robbed.
