Hi All.
I'm trying to hunt down an effect which I first saw performed by David Copperfield, though it was not an exclusive effect of his, nor did it originate with him. I seem to recall having located it online a couple of years ago, but now seem to be able to find no information on this little gem. I've scoured this site using all the applicable keywords I could think of, but to no avail. The effect is essentially a trisection of one arm with the subsequent vanish of the middle portion of same said arm. His title for this trick in the show was "an invention". It was performed to a classical piece and when the box through which the arm was placed was opened, one could see straight through it. In fact, his assistant would then take the conductor's wand David was holding and pass her arm through the empty space from front to back, continuing to "conduct" the music. So, it appears not to have been any kind of mirror box. Does this ring a bell? Any help is most apreciated. Thank you. travis

While Wellington's Tri-Section is nice, I am quite positive that is not the version he used (at least in the past. The one Copperfield used was made by Abbott's Magic, called the "Modernistic Amputation". I used to own one- It is a very interesting method and deceptive depending on the paint job. The Abbott's version can not be seen on their website, but it is in the printed catalog.

Thanks for your responses guys, but still no luck.
I see no listing for "Tri-Section" or anything that resembles it at Wellington. I seem to remember looking at "Modernistic Amputation" at Abbott's back when I was originally searching for this but, as I recall, it was not the same. It was a similar effect, but the method was slightly different, based on what I know. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Anyhow, I visited Abbott's site and it is nowhere to be found. thanks travis Posted: Feb 10, 2006 9:26pm ------------------------------------------ Okay, I found the Wellington piece. This resembles the effect Copperfield did and based on the write-up, I assume it's the same. A bit high-priced, I think. Especially with that ridiculous paint job. Thanks for your help!

Dear members,
This illusionette is called Tri-section and is the creation of Larry White. David has performed the piece in his Broadway show "Dreams and Nightmares" (1996) and he owned exclusive rights to it for 5 or 6 years. I know that he was not pleased when it was released to the magic "community". It is a great piece and I have been performing it for the last three years to excellent audience reactions. It is completely different in effect and method than Abbott's "Modernistic Amputation". Regards, D |

El rafael is also correct when he said Welington builds this. While it is not showing up on their website. I have a flyer they sent out advertizing their Tri-Section.

Following a five year licensing arrangement with one of magic's top professionals, Tri-Section, Larry White's ingenious invention, is now available to all in the magic fraternity! This clever one-man illusion is a real baffler. A box is seen resting on a small oak stand. The box is just large enough to accommodate your arm. Place your arm through the box, allowing your hand to protrude from the other side. Now, place two solid blades through the box, apparently cutting your arm into thirds. Now for the magic! The center box is lifted up and the center section of your arm is gone. The audience gets a clear view through the box. Still further proof results as a wand is removed from the front panel and pushed through the open section proving, that there are no mirrors or false panels where your arm once was. Finally, the center section is lowered and the two blades removed. Slowly withdraw your arm showing it to be in a fully restored condition. It's just that clean. It is actually your hand. No false body parts are used. The blades are wider than the depth of the box allowing no room for your arm to avoid them. As the trick progresses, every possible answer is eliminated. It's an absolute impossibility. Yet, through Larry White's inventive genius, and Wellington's fine craftsmanship, you can easily accomplish this apparent miracle. Includes custom fitted carrying case http://www.magicvideodepot.com/main/memb......llusion/ This is a somewhat different version not as good http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67QZ1Yy3enM I Think David performed this on a daytime talk show one time or on Leno
Thanks,

In his live show, he always said it was a piece out of his museum. Something over a hundred years old and then he performed it to music. His 'box' did indeed look old. I never thought it was a modern invention, and just assumed it was old. LOL
Guess I was fooled after all! |

I own one of these and also have a video of David performing it in Germany, his presentation is indeed based around it being an invention of his. He begins by explaining that when he was at school he invented a homework machine that could do 6 peoples homework at the same time and he was going to make a fortune with it, but all it got him was detention. He then says, "let me show you my latest science project".
It is indeed performed to classical music and the baton is used to conduct the music and also pass through the middle section once the separation has happened. His assistant steps behind it to take the baton showing that all of it is transparent. I have had a lot of fun with mine, although I have had to remove it from my show several times if the audience is seated to close or angles are a bit dodgy, this illusion does have some angle issues, but when you get the angles right it fools people badly, although I will say it is better used as a filler illusion rather than a feature of your show. This is how David used it also. I hope this was useful. Rich |
