Well I just finished listening to it, and on some points I agree with him. You act as if hes talking about you. Are you a good magician? ok then you don't have to worry about it. If your a @@@@ magician. Then hes talking about you...

You are bringing this up in the mentalism area. Mentalists think they are a step above "magicians". If you brought this up in the childrens magic or card magic I think you might get a different response.
You can sign me up for Hokey and crappy. I don't give a crap what Criss thinks of me. I get paid to do what I love. What else matters? |

I work at about 95% referal. People that I perform for either have seen me, or have been told about me. They know what they are getting before I show up. I don't think he will take one cent from me.

Jack it did not take Criss Angel saying that to make the public think that. The public already thinks those things. If not worse. In general people think magicians are freaks.
What is harder to overcome is a truly horrible magician. They make work harder than Angel ever will. |

Slim King,
It was a great interview, and there was really nothing offensive in his remarks; Criss was merely observing Sturgeon's Law, that 90% of anything is garbage. There are millions of books out there, but very few of them are truly great. There are millions of actors out there, but most of them are sub par. In ANY population there is a bell curve with the truly awful on one end, and the truly great on the other end, with the bulging middle filled with varying degrees of mediocrity from worse to better. Criss was making an accurate observation and calling us to be better and more creative at what we do, not singling anyone out. Look at American Idol (or any similar competition, even in magic)-- the worst fill up the early contests, and the more talented continue on to fill the middle contests (and there are LOTS of each), but only the extremely talented and driven ones make the final cut. That bell curve continues in the "talented" group -- some are much worse, some are much better. That's all Criss was saying. Any serious, professional writer will tell you that MOST of what's published each year is dreck -- but would any aspiring writer take that as a personal insult? Of course not. Seth |

Hi Carlos. Yes, you're right of course. I may have completely misread the message. But to be honest, I still find it very ambiguous and it still sounds directed towards me. I love your appraisal of me, excellent! I've never been an ego-maniac before.
For Salsa, if that posting *truly* was not directed towards me then I humbly do apologise. I can only say something to myself that I have said to many others here, 'Post in haste, repent at leisure'. However, I still stand by my statements regarding Angel. Some of us (and I include myself in that) are not very good, even those who regard themselves as pro's. CarlD |

You say that 95% of your work comes from referals....right? EXACTLY MY POINT!!!!!....No one is willing to step out and hire a Magician because they are ALL MOSTLY CRAPPY.... That's what Chris Angel told them isn't it?....That's what they've been told, so it is only LOGICAL that you ONLY GET REFERALS. This line of thinking has ALREADY cost you money $$$$$$$$, but you just don't see it! Perhaps you could have ALL of your referals and twice as many people contacting you on the phone also! If you go with Chris Angels thinking, you will only get what you get (NOW), and nothing more. Get it? Your situation PROVES my point completely! Dare I say, Once again, you are wrong! LOL

What Criss Angel says has no bearing on any work I would ever get. Fact. Unless he personally calls people and tells them I am rubbish.

There is, as some have said, already a feeling amongst the public that magic (in terms of traditional work mainly, but not exclusively) and magicians are crap.
I remember when I was growing up, that when magicians came on TV we turned it off in most cases. The worst offender in our minds then was a magician who I now regard as being amongst the UK's best, a name that all UK magicians would readily recognise. This person is well respected world-wide. To we children though - and later teens and young adults - and to my parents too, this man was the lamest of all, with the worst possible stage personna. You either thought of him as cheesey or scarey, that was how bad it was. Did he know (or care)? Had HE considered how the public felt about how he portrayed himself - and magic in general? Is it something we all try to avoid considering too deeply, the question of 'are we getting it right'? Maybe it's a particularly British attitude, I don't know. I lived in a large town for a while, big, but close-knit. At one point some years ago, one guy from the town got into all the papers for getting a big award in a prestigious magic comp'in London (he's unfortunately dead now, but some of you would still know of him). He did traditionl magic, played competently, and with a perfectly normal and acceptable stage persona. But when he returned to do his 'victory' show, the venue was near empty. Why, I later asked those I knew? "...I don't want to waste a night watching some dickhead in a Tux pulling fake rabbits out of his ass..." was the reply in most cases. I'm not sure of the real message here. It may be that some of use perceive magic and mentalism to have far more importance in the real world than they really do. CarlD |

Slim,
On another thread, someone said they asked an audience of hundreds including many of his target demographic group how many people had ever heard of Criss Angel. No hands went up. You can look up the number for how many people have seen the shows. It isn't many. We are magicians, so we are very interested in magic. I got interested in Criss Angel after the coverage in Genii. Now take a look at the kinds of people who book you. Most have never heard of Criss Angel, or they can see that you are offering something very different. As for your audience, it's your job to win them over, and it looks like you do. So who are they going to believe, some guy on a radio interview, or the live performer standing in front of them? One of the nicest things anyone ever said to me after a show, after they had told me how much fun they had, was "I probably shouldn't tell you this, but...I hate magic!" I said, "I know exactly what you mean! I hate magic too!" Since then, she has been to several more of my shows. Yours, Paul |

There are thundreds or maybe thousands of Novice Blues Brothers Impersonators in this world. They are having FUN!
I would never call them anything derogatory like Hokey or Crappy. They are perpetuating the Blues Brothers. It's just FUN. If I, or anyone in the media, says one bad thing about Blues Brothers Impersonators ( Like they Mostely Suck), and I lose only One Percent(1%) of my usual spectators, I will lose over 7,500 listeners/viewers in just one year. Magic is just the same. If we badmouth ourselves, all of us suffer! Dave

Magicians are rubbish. Fact. The general consensus amongst people is of the worst possible scenario, most of the time they are right. Criss Angel did it no harm as there are not enough good magicians about to change the way of thinking. I remember doing table hopping a couple of years ago and being told point blank by one woman that she hated magic. Later on in the lounge of the hotel she stopped me and said that she had really enjoyed watching what I had been doing with the other tables and was a bit disappointed that she had turned me away. I was packing up but I got some stuff back out and gave her a performance, she was delighted.
The point of that was not just to show how brilliant I am, but to highlight that her mindset was already made up by 'watching' bad magicians. She would never have booked a magician anyway. I like to think that now she will have a different opinion, until the next guy says 'no, the clean one. Oh that is the clean one' then it will all come crashing down. If you don't like what was being said by Criss then go out there and change people's minds. If you are good enough then his words will have no effect. Do people still eat at McDonalds even though people have given them bad press for years? Or have McDonalds changed the way they present themselves slightly in light of that bad press? |

One assumption you've made about the Woman's mindset....It being made by watching bad magicians. How do you know that she wasn't just "Told" how bad they were?????
By folks like Chris Angel. Please tell my friends here in Orlando who all make a nice living as "Full Time Professional Magicians" that they are Rubbish. Or should I do that for you?

I don't think I need to hide the fact that I can't stand Criss Angel..
However what he says in the radio broadcast is true to an extent, how he delivers that message is very negative, sure there are heps of really awful magicians out there that should not be working however there are some great magicians who do a storming job. I feel that Criss Angel saying this is really the pot calling the kettle black, Blaine did wonders for close up magic, simple straight forward card effects, Derren has done wonders for Mind Reading. Criss Angel has done wonders for hair spray and fake tan and very little else. His shows ARE full of edits which lets face it we called all come across as miracle worker if we could stop and start time when we wanted to which is the same as a TV edit. He lacks sincerity, he lacks personality, he lacks skill and he lacks humanity.. The mans ego is as big as my bald patch. We ALL face criticism some valid some not but Criss seems to like to put us all in one barrel. If he doesn't know you or you haven't consulted on his show YOU are awful.. Nice guy.. His Mind Freak series was just awful.. Blaine did it well and took the publics imagination by storm and Angel knows it as the guy is clearly threatened by Blaine and his success. I for one am delighted that Angel will be signed for 10 years in Vegas, anything to keep this man away from television.. A.R. P.S. Did I mention I'm not a fan of Angel?

Take a marketing class. The most powerful marketing you can have is referal. Word of mouth is the best way to advertise. It costs 0.00 and you get great leads. Do I still have to sell myself after I get the lead? Of course. It is at that time that I can prove I am not a crappy performer. Slim, I am busy enough as it is. I have all the shows that I want for right now. Criss Angels comments have not cost me one cent. I am sure they wont cost me one cent in the future. I am afraid this time you are wrong. 10 years in Vegas will not keep him off TV. Only lack of money will keep him off TV. Speaking of Blaine does he have a new special coming out soon? |
