Hey everyone,
Not all of you know me, but some of you do and I'd like to post this question to all of you... I was thinking of publishing some of my original coin magic in a book/manuscript and wanted to know how everyone felt about a book/manuscript that actually had real world, workable material in it? The reason I say real world material is b/c I perform for laymen and gear my effect towards them and not towards magicians. This of course is not to say that others don't do the same thing, but I felt it necessary to note this. The book/manuscript would contain effects anywhere from easy to advanced (most easy-intermediate), and all the effects would have visual impact on the spectators. None of the effects would be very impressive if they were shown to magicians but through my experience performing them for laymen, the effects get excellent reactions, thus being real world material. Also a basic knowledge of coin magic would be required to perform some of the effects. Like I said I just wanted to get some feedback from all of you to see what everyone thought. Thanks, Bill |

Bill,
I am always ready to learn more about coin magic. I think it would be a good idea. I say go for it. Side note: I noticed you are from Mt. Laurel, NJ. Is that anywhere near Mt. Holly/Hainesport? (My wife is from that area.)

I'm definitely interested in your manuscript. And don't give a second thought to the fact that it's not for magicians. Magic is for entertaining an audience; not to impress other magicians.

Another approach would be to first get some of your material published in a magazine. Getting a few items published first would help get the material vetted through an editorial process for content and completeness. It could also create interest in your material prior to publishing a book. It would be seen by a much wider audience. Most of the larger magic magazines have circulations of 5,000 or more. A best selling book or manuscript would sell 1,000 copies.Obviously if the material published in the magazines is well received it will translate into more sales down the road when you do publish a book. Just a thought.

Tom: I appreciate the feedback...One of my routines is in the works to be put in another project, don't know if I'm allowed to say more about that though. I've been in contact with Antinomy about submitting an effect or two, I just haven't gotten around to sending anything to them yet to get feedback to see if my stuff makes the cut or not...I'll be getting around to that soon though...

I'd be interested. I'd also be curious as to how much of the material uses gaffed coins.

Off the top of my head, if you have a C/S and an e] your good to perform the material, not all of it uses gaffs but off the top of my head that's all that you'd need.

Bry,
You should do it too!!! I think I've been saying that for the past 3 yrs that we've known each other. As for the lectures, I don't think I could pull that off, you def need to go for it though. I still think we should do what we were talking about when we went to Magi-fest but that's a whole other story. -Bill |

I have gotten the opportunity to witness practically everything first hand. Bill has some top rate, real world material. I have seen some of the storyboards/prototypes/sketches of the material and it isn't some cheap thrown together item. Bill has a keen eye to specifics and details and tries to cover every possible situation that one may encounter when performing the effects and sleights. He also is as specific with explainations of the routines. It is definitly worth the wait....and the photography looks top notch!!!!
Bryan...what the blink have you been waiting for...get you ars on the road and lecture. You have some great stuff. I AM STILL ****ED I MISSED MAGI-FEST. I am never going to get over it!!!!! JPV

Bill,
I think the magic world needs more road-tested material. So much of what is on the market these days is to satisfy the need for "something new to play with". Books on magic that has been tested under fire for a lay audience (and that is what this art is all about, right?)are few and far between compared to the rest of that "stuff" on the market. That being said, there is one thing I would suggest. Do your homework. So many times I see things that have been around for quite a while being re-hashed as new due to people not looking into the plots they work on deeply enough. Modern examples of this are the so-called "Two Card Monte" and most recently the effect "Infusion". These effects already existed, but due to lack of effort in the research department they have been released as new effects. Crediting is also an improtant issue. I believe credits are extremely important, as they keep the art moving forward. It shows people what justifies your effect being in print and shows people how they can research the effect themselves, if they are so inclined. Darwin Ortiz' books are examples of superb crediting, as are Dan Watkins' CoinVanish books(there are more, such are Mike Close's Workers books, but this is just for an example). I am not try to talk down to you or say that you are guilty of this, it is simply advice from the heart that comes from a guy that care about his art a great deal. I think you care about the art a great deal too, and I know you will keep the art moving forward with you contributions. Good luck with your project, and if you would like to be put in touch with a superb writer/editor, let me know. I know a guy that will get the job done right and exceed your expectations. Can't wait to read your contributions to the art! Sincerely, -Karl |

Hey Karl,
Thanks for the response...I totally understand where you are coming from. The one thing that I strive for more then testing my effects in front of people, is to properly credit. I would never disrespect anyone that has come before me in the art and it seems that not many feel this way. -Bill PS. I sent you a pm |
