Gentleman,
I am interested in making my own gibeciere/poachers pouch. About the only thing I am unsure of in terms of advanced proparation, is what kind of leather to use. Specifically, how thick should the leather be? My guess is 7-8 oz leather which is about 1/8" thick. How does that sound? Also, would you recommend oil tanned or vegetable tanned? I have read what the book differences are but.... Any help would be greatly appreciated!

That's a tough one. I hear Gazzo uses five different types of leather in his pouches. On examining mine, I see very heavy pebble grain leather for the face, smooth but nearly as heavy for the back, soft thin leather for the gusset, and a thin smooth leather for trim, plus whatever he uses for laces.
It pretty much depends on your requirements. Gazzo needs a heavy front so the large loads don't distort the shape of the pouch. The soft gusset allows for expansion. This style of pouch looks the same whether it's full or empty. Frank Starsini's "Cellini" pouch is soft leather throughout. It's much lighter and rolls easily for storage. It doesn't have the stiffness of a Gazzo pouch, nor is it necessary if you're not doing massive cup loads. It works best for general purpose storage with it's various coin pockets with room for medium loads at the bottom.
No trees were killed in the making of this message, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.
