For some reason I thought Unclegames price was cheaper, but it's not.
I do want some 19mm dice they have though, and would rather consolidate an order. I've also found some cheaper sources, just gotta dig a bit. http://www.shop.com/op/~Dead_Hand_Chaos_Poker-prod-15256871 $7.95 http://paizo.com/store/byCompany/s/smirkDagger/v5748btpy773p $8.99, etc.. (they probably whack you on shipping though !) lol

I used to play cards with a blind fellow in High School, we never would let him deal.
I will sort of slow some card handling, and a few things one might like to do are harder to pull off with cards marked in braille. k

Phrenology might be an easier way to read bumps, and you get to really play with people's heads.

Especially if you shave braille messages in the stubble !
In a similar vein (I suppose), I've pondered using the sign language alphabet to secretly transfer a chosen card or letter to an assistant (or vice versa), but letters like "j", "v", and "z" are a bit too obvious, and to a lesser degree, "y" "c", "i", and "o". With a few substitutes, it would make for a nice quick'n'easy code.

They may seem too obvious, but as a rule, sign is more adaptive than spoken language. And if you're not being particular about it, use the concept, change the sign. There are some excellent dictionaries published, and you could pick and choose from them.
A sign doesn't have to be clear. It just needs to be understood.

Secret signals have long been used in everything from mentalism to street gangs to baseball. The problem, to my mind, with sign language -- or any adaptations of it -- are that they look like signs/signals. It seems to me that it would not be hard to devise something much more subtle. A tilt of the head, a touch to the nose, and itch; just simple everyday mannerisms that have no meaning to anyone but your partner.
To get back to the original topic of this thread, I think the same problem exists with braille playing cards. People may not be able to read the braille, but there is clearly a signal there. Many would recognize it as braille (I know I would, even though I have no clue how to read it). I am sure that it may be possible to use braille to good effect in magic/mentalism. In fact, it may have a great deal of potential. I just think that it would have to be much more subtle than these cards.... But then again, maybe that is just me. Dave |

Well, flatly put, I started the thread sort of tongue-in-cheek anyway - I'm sure the cards would be unusable except under extraordinary circumstances.
Which, in a weird, twisted train of thought, w(hich I shalln't expose here ;-) ) I came up with another question: what's the name for the condition, if it in fact exists, where a person is afflicted with a lack of sense of touch; in fact, probably wouldn't feel heat or cold either. I could see a bizarre story being spun around something like this... somehow, somewhere. It could be combined with a typical "superman" type magic effect where the magician doesn't burn, perhaps, or feel pain.. something along those lines.

Mystician, even if it was tongue in cheek, it was not without value. It caused me (and I am sure others) to think more about marking things by touch, which done well could be very effective.
As far as the condition where a person has no sense of touch, I don't have a clue as to the name of it, but it does indeed exist. I had a friend with that condition when I was growing up. He had to be very careful in the kitchen as it was very easy to burn himself (which he did on a regular basis when he was about 12). Anyway, keep the "off the wall" ideas coming. The often lead to good stuff. Dave |
