I'm a member of the Magic Castle Junior Program. Next time we have a meeting, I plan on auditioning a close-up act for Sunday Brunch. Here are the routines, which I have made segway into each other (although I can't think of an underlying plotline, maybe some advice on that).
Changes (Acer) Directed Verdict (Bannon)--I'm buying Dear Mr. Fantasy this Saturday and if the new version isn't that much different, I may use that The Last Trick of Dr. Jacob Daley (Daley)-I may end my Ace routine here, or add in Always Cut the Cards (Jennings). Any thoughts? Sponge Balls (Burger)-I say that you probably are sick of card tricks by now, so let's do some tricks with other objects Fourth Dimensional Telepathy (Annemann) Las Vegas Leaper (Harris) Ambitious Card to Ringbox (Wonder)-I've had the box out since the beginning of the show and say I have one last card trick to show you. Any advice would be appreciated. The whole act takes about 16 minutes. Any ideas for a throughline? Should anything be taken out? Thanks very much. Cheers, mackmania P.S. I posted this in the Going for the Gold forum as well.

My advice: don't do to much. you are not clear what you really want. I would do maximum 5 effects. do what you best. one theme could be cards or aces . combine a few of them making it one.

Hello,
I was kind of disturbed when you said your patter line is "I say that you probably are sick of card tricks by now, so let's do some tricks with other objects" It may be a joke, but never ever downplay your magic. Do you think any respected entertaining magician (please don't go out of your way to find an exception) would ever say "I bet you hate illusions by now, so I'll do something else"? No. Especially don't say this when you go back to card tricks after. It's just the same as pulling out a pack of cards and saying " You've probably seen this trick before but..." I recommend you fix that, and if you really do think they are sick of cards, then cut out a card trick. Good Luck, Ben |

The next meeting is the 25th of February and if you want me to I will watch your audition and give feed back. Heck, I will anyway and there is nothing you can do about it!! Ha ha Ha!
Seriously, think about being entertaining and not rushing. With that in mind, it looks like you may have too many tricks, but you may be a rapid fire magician and it may work for you. If you can bring a video camera it would help with long term disection of your routine. There are a lot of magicians who say, "Now I have to do a card trick, union rules!" or something like that, but then the procedue to do a mind blower! If your card tricks are "just standard" ie "crap!" then, that may not be the best joke to use at that time. Kirk |

Good Point Kirk.
If your card tricks are incredible and your audience loves you, that joke can be used successfully because of its obvious sarcasm. If some may be bored, then keep away from those kind of jokes, or more importantly, those kinds of tricks. Ben |

Here is my revised brunch act.
Diehard Opener-Change Double Reverse-Ghosts Sponge Balls-Clowns Spectator As Mindreader-Getting Mind Read The Last Dream-Nightmares and Death Cannibals-Scary Movies Ambitious Card to Ringbox-Claustrophobia The Last Dream is so spooky. I may have to cancel out the ending about passing the dream on as I'm the one supposed to be scared, not everyone in the audience. Cheers, mackmania
