I emailed the following email to Mr. Rowland:
> Mr. Rowland, > > I have read the threads in the Magic Café about this book, as well as read everything you have on your website. > > I do have a few very specific questions regarding the system before ordering. Note that I am not asking for method. > > First, based on everything I have read about the principle, it cannot be used with another person's cards immediately. Is that correct? In other words, there is some kind of preparation done to the cards or whatever is used. > > Second, everything in the ad on your site indicates that, although it says other objects besides playing cards can be used, everything was a flat, paper object, such as business cards, ESP cards, etc. Is this also correct? Larger objects, 3 dimensional objects cannot be used? > > Third, if demonstrating true "sight by touch", I would think one would be able to determine more than just color of a playing card. Can the system be used to determine the EXACT playing card?? > > Again, I am not asking these questions to try to determine your method. I just want to make sure this system is right for me. He refused to answer my questions, so I am now asking them to this forum. Im sure that someone who has the system can answer these questions without tipping the method. Based on the responses from others, I doubt this is a method I could figure out anyway. I just want a little more complete information.

... based on everything I have read about the principle, it cannot be used with another person's cards immediately. Is that correct? Yes. Although the cards you use can be given away to the audience after the performance. Quote:
Larger objects, 3 dimensional objects cannot be used? No, the principle could be employed with some other kinds of objects, though as such things are more likely to be identifiable by touch anyway, I don't know of anyone who's tried this. Quote:
Can the system be used to determine the EXACT playing card?? Yes, though with more effort and difficulty. And there are some physical limitations such that not everyone may be able to do this. But everyone should be able to carry it further than simply red/black if they choose to (e.g., spot card vs. face card, exact suit, etc.). ... Doug

He refused to answer my questions Not so, my friend, not so. Cool that temper. What I actually said was that I didn't want to be unfair to those who had already purcahsed it! In fact, this is exactly what I wrote: - - - Hi Brent, Thanks for getting in touch and for your interest in Sense of Touch. I'm sorry, but in fairness to all my many customers around the world who have purchased this item, the only information I provide about SOT is what you see on the website: - a comprehensive description of SOT and its potential - probably the most comprehensive FAQ for an item of this kind ever published on the web - a large and representative sample of comments and testimonials mainly from people who have bought it If this is not enough for you to decide if it's suitable for you, then I would imagine it probably isn't. But thank you for your interest all the same, and I hope to welcome you as a customer on some future occasion. Yours in magical thought and spirit, - Ian - - - Not quite so brusque, is it?

I apologize to Mr. Rowland if my post came off as brusque.
My intent was not to post "Mr. Rowland is a jerk, and won't answer my questions." More like "Mr. Rowland will not answer my questions. Will soemone else please do so?" Bottom line is: I have questions about the product. I feel that I should be privy to as much information as I wish (short of anything that actually reveals the secret.) I do NOT feel that any of my questions are leading to the method, and I fail to see how giving me further information to make an educated buying decision is being unfair to previous customers. Yes, many people have raved about it. I am sure that it is a fantastic product and well worth the money to someone who will use it. However, seeing as I do very little close-up mentalism, I am trying to determine if the product is right for me. If I can work your system to have a PRACTICAL method of determining exactly which card is given to me, then I will go and order it immediately. If it is POSSIBLE, but not PRACTICAL, then I am sure I will have to give it more thought. Sure, it is POSSIBLE to levitate an elephant using 5000 miles of invisible thread, but it is not a PRACTICAL method. So again, my sincerest apologies if I came off as brusque or attacking Mr. Rowland. Such was not my intent.

Hi Brent,
No hard feelings. Peace and light. Here's the deal. It's my booklet, I wrote it, I sell it. At the end of the day, I know how much info I want out there about SOT, and it's all on my website. You emailed me, I replied (as I always do). You say you feel entitled to ask further questions so long as you don't ask about the method, but I say to you that's often a fine line to walk! Sometimes the more you know about what you can and cannot do, the more clues you get to a secret that (a) others have paid for and (b) many have agreed is a secret worth keeping a secret. That's all. I just took exception to you saying I "refused to answer questions", which carries a rather negative connotation. I've had a heckof a busy week ever since I launched Cold Reading III, but I did take the time to reply to you politely, as I always do to every single email I receive, and to answer as I saw fit. I just didn't give you the info you wanted, which is a different thing entirely. And my motivation is to protect the investment of those who have paid for it. Peace to you, whether you buy it or not. I remain your friend in magical thought.

I like SOT, but I have limited use for it! This is a simple fact for me However, when I do use it-IT KILLS! I have problems with the method do to an accident I had, which impairs my sense of smell and touch, so I have to work a bit harder, but it is well worth the money.
As a close up worker you might want to have someone pick any card sign it and then them them which card it is. It can be done. Kevin |

I must agree with drewmcadam,
Just buy it. and in defence of Mr. Rowland it does get difficult to draw the line on how much information you want to give out. After saying that I will tell you I plan on purchasing the book myself. And this is after I just told myself, OK I am so behind in my reading that I will not buy any more books. Then I read that huge thread. Curses to all you here in the Café. Sergeant |

After reading this thread I had to look at Ian's web site. Yes and I also as with Sergeant could not stop myself from buying SOT. All I can say this thread and the ad for SOT must have some extreamly strong subliminal messages beneath the surface.
(I'm only joking) but I'm certainly looking forward to recieving it. Thanks for bringing SOT to my attention. The Paranormalist |

SOT I found is an excellent trick...and the manuscript well written and produced. However the one disappointment I have is that whatever must be done prior to performing the effect, according to the instructions, should be done each and every time the trick is performed. This doesn't make the trick as practical or impromptu as one might hope. However to the audience I think this would be a killer effect!

Thanks Towledge for being as intentionlaly discreet as you were and not giving too much away. I appreciate your careful choice of words, and your comments.
You are referring here to what I call the SWIFT Challenge effect, and it's true that for ideal and optimum performing conditions I always choose to prepare as described in the booklet. However, some others have maintained that this is over-fussy of me, and that 'prepare once, perform many' IS viable. To some extent, it's a matter of personal preference. I'm not making this into an ad. for the item, but as you know there is more to SOT than just the SWIFT Challenge reds/blacks routine. It's a principle with many uses, and you might want to explore some of the ideas and themes in part II of the booklet. In my wallet I always have with me four blank cards which I use for Self ESPression (page 35), this being the strongest effect in the booklet in my view. These take up next to no room and are always ready to go. If I want to be ready to do it more than once, I have more than one set of four cards (which makes sense anyway since the spec writes on all four, so they get used up each time).

I think to be fair, Ian has given you more than enough information on his web site about the SOT book, far more information than other magic dealers would give about their magic products.
Also I personally dont think what he advertises is misleading like other magic adverts can be. I have the book and it does what he says. Just buy the book and enjoy the read. |
