Product Name: Move Mastery Vol.1
Author: Peter Duffie Type: Card sleights, switches, productions (16 in all) Format: CD (video clips) Produced by: Alternative Media Date: 2004 Duration: See below Price: £14.95 / $24.95 Difficulty: 2-4/5 Personal Rating: 8/10 I've been meaning to get this for a while now and I'm glad I finally got around to it. It is available directly from Peter Duffie's web site (this page) where there's also a trailer showing most of the moves from the CD. Once ordered, the CD arrived promptly, encased with a printed cover but no 'on body' printing (I've also seen it online from other outlets with a printed body). The body was, however, signed and numbered. There's a 'home produced' look and feel to it all (not surprising since the credits say: Production: Home Movies) but this doesn't in any way detract from the quality of the items that are taught or impairs the viewer's ability to learn the moves. The explanations, though they might seem short in length from the times given below, are clear and suffice to grasp what's required, and of course you can easily rewind to watch segments over again. Anyone familiar with Peter Duffie will know how strong and creative his work is. This is not one continuous movie. There are thirty two video clips in all (16 demos, 16 corresponding explanations) of varying lengths. The menu and navigation is simplicity itself; you can quickly work your way backwards and forwards through each item. Everything on this volume is in-the-hands without the need for a table. Okay, so to the moves themselves – here they are with my brief comments: Fasteal #1: A thing of beauty and as always Peter Duffie's performance is flawless. A selected card is cleanly stolen away from the middle of the deck. In fact, this along with the two steals that follow are worth the price of the CD alone. The explanatory clip (not including the initial demonstration) lasts some three minutes and everything is covered including how not to execute it. See it on the online trailer (where the Ace of Hearts is stolen). Fasteal #2: Achieves the same as above by a different means. The initial 'get ready' idea is great on its own with the card finishing diagonally in the deck (you'll use it in other ways too I'm sure) ready for a Diagonal Palm Shift. Explanation lasts about a minute (some parts already covered in above clip). See it on the trailer (Six of Hearts is stolen). Fasteal #3: Another fine steal (this time from a spread) that's again ideal for a card-to-pocket effect. Includes an explanation of the Spread Half Pass, with thanks to Roy Walton. Explanation is two minutes long. The Blink Change: A fine colour change and not too difficult to perform, but you'll need to watch your angles. The explanation lasts two minutes. It is the first item on the trailer. Centre Block Palm: Begins with an explanation of a nice double lift technique which inspired the Centre Block Palm. Includes an improvement on the Centre Block Palm first published in Duffie's book, Card Compulsions. The explanation lasts a little over five minutes. Palm Add – Bottom: Adding palmed cards to the bottom of the deck. Explanation lasts a minute. Palm Add – Top: Adding palmed cards to the top of the deck. Explanation lasts a minute and a half. Fan Pass: Essentially a Hermann Pass (which is described) coupled with a fan at the end. The explanation is a minute long. See it on the trailer. No Table Seconds: I can deal tabled seconds pretty well but there was still something to learn here, with an emphasis on timing rather than a fine brief and also how to hold the dealt cards in the other hand so you are ready to take the next one. The technique is based on Buckley's method for dealing seconds. This is a great way of counting cards from hand to hand with the option of dealing a second card whenever you need to. The explanation lasts about a minute and a quarter. See it on the trailer. Rotary Transformation: Another great colour change that I'm sure you'll soon be using. The explanation is a minute long. See it on the trailer (Ace of Hearts changes to Queen of Clubs). Riffle Pop!: A neat way of revealing a selection, and very easy to do! The explanation lasts a little over a minute. See it on the trailer (Jack of Hearts 'pops' into view). Explosion!: Peter Duffie: "This started of as Riffle Pop and then went bananas!" The explanation lasts two minutes. The last item on the trailer. 4 Ace Production #1: A flourishy production of four Aces that are apparently lost in the deck. Involves a number of techniques which are explained, including a variation on a split second deal and a Jon Racherbaumer change. The explanation lasts a little over two and a half minutes. See a small part of this on the trailer. 4 Ace Production #2: Even better than the above production in my view but requires a prior set up of the cards (so use as an opener if you like). Again, involves a number of techniques with each Ace respectively produced by means of: a slip cut, a form of snap change, a top palm (assumes you know this), and Roy Walton's blow change. The explanation lasts three and a half minutes. You can see just the end of the routine on the trailer (Ace of Clubs changes to Ace of Diamonds). Palm to Palm Transfer: Superb! A way of transferring palmed cards from one hand to another. You won't be using it every day of the week but it sure is slick and clean! The explanation last a little over a minute and a half. See it on the trailer (the Aces are transferred). Bonus Item: Two-handed Pass: Almost a standard pass except it allows you to perform the pass up at your fingertips (and perhaps at a slightly slower speed also). Uses an unconventional break (two fingers instead of one). Explanation lasts about a minute and a half. See it on the trailer (Ace of Spades passed to top). I'm the kind of guy who if I get at least a couple of knock-out moves or effects from a book/DVD that I know I'll use then I'm quite happy. With Move Mastery I think you'll get that and much more. I can highly recommend it to every cardician, especially at this great price. You'll add some great, useable, and original moves to your arsenal. I look forward to Vol.2!

I have it on good authority that Peter Duffie will be re-shooting his riffle pass work for the second volume of Move Mastery. Something to look forward to!

I'm remastering the MM 1 CD for Peter so it will be playable on DVD players (in the same way my CDs work). I'll also be passing this information along, so hopefully the second volume will also work that way.
Take care, Ian |

Are these just sleights..or are routines/effects included?

^ Sleights only for the most part... although the ace productions stand as quick routines you could use (especially as openers), the same goes for the colour changes. Riffle Pop! and Explosion! offer you different ways to reveal the selected card(s).

Thank for this very nice review !
I just love the Fan Pass and getting interested just for this move. And also "No Table Seconds", is this technique doable or easier than other method ? Thanks Nicolas |
