I think these dvds are a waste. Paul wilson is not a great performer, and is a decent technician. The dvds however are HIS interpretation of the royal road dvds. Why would I want that? Its like reinventing the wheel.

There is not much buzz on this.
How were the reviews in Genii and Magic Magazine? |

Clamon86, a decent technician? I suggest that you actually watch the set before making any claims here. Pierredan, the reviews are all GLOWING. Genii has a page and a half review for R. Paul Wilson's Royal Road to Card Magic DVD set. This is something that does not need buzz because pretty much any educated cardician and even newbies are picking these sets up SUPER quick. I think it's increasing book sales for the book as well. This is the MUST HAVE DVD set. It follows the format of the book and contains pactically the entire content of the book explained in extremely easy to understand video instructions with updates to some of the dated material in the book. The updates are not interpretations of the book but updates to create a better flow and LOGIC. Best value DVD set of this year and actually one of the best value DVD sets EVER. Get it. Get it now. If you don't have the book, buy this along with the book. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.

A fascinating thread, with many good arguments for and against the Royal Road to Card Magic DVDs. I'm sure that they are a great companion, but I confess that I am still in love with the book! I remember the days 25 yearsa ago as a teenager when I could entertain for over an hour in the pub with just a deck of regular cards and effects from this book! I rarely had to buy my own drinks!

It's great dvd,I hope to see the tricks performed on the video.but what dissapointed me,is the cool audience, they almost never react. That makes the tricks I thought should be strong looked boring, discouraged me to do it in realworld.
why does wilson think audience's reation will overshadow the magic,to a trick, audience's reaction says everything. |

Well said Kissdadookie. As for Clamon86's comments about Paul not being a great performer. You must have not seen this man perform in the flesh.I have seen him perform for both lay audiences and seasoned magicians and he held everyone spellbound!
As for him being a decent technician, well I don't know who you set your standards by but his skills and creativity are some of the best I've ever witnessed and I've seen and sessioned with some great magicians like Carney,Williamson and Dean Dill. They all share the same opinion. I've studied both the book and the dvd and as Paul says explicitly in the intro, the dvd is supposed to be used as a companion to the text. And it is an excellent dvd,Paul's teaching style is clear, direct and concise and his enthusiasm for the material is refreshing. Many newcomers to the art would probably never give the book a second chance if it wasn't for this set but I think now they will. |
