I've been trying to locate copies of Copperfield's television specials. I have seen sets of DVDs of the specials on eBay. However, they are in the "VCD" format used overseas. Is anyone familiar with this format of DVDs? Do you know whether they will work with standard US DVD players?
Thanks! |

MagicKev,
Are you familiar with "David Copperfield - Illusion" DVD? It's a compliation of many of his TV specials. I got mine from his live show but you can obtain it from Amazon.com or sometimes on Ebay. I've also purchased the "VCD" set off Ebay and was terribly disappointed by the horrible "poorly tuned TV" like quality. Bosco |

Everyone one of the DVD's on ebay is a copy of the VHS TV specials. NONE are put out by the Copperfield camp.
I see Copyright violations everywhere... |

I have some of the Asian VCDs and they will not play on all players! Some DVD players are not licensed to use the format. I have been able to pull the files off the disc and play them on the computer by changing the file extension to .mpg. That may not work on everything! VCD by nature is a lower quality than DVD. They could be recorded to a DVD but that won't help the quality.

Are you referring to an official release, or is this something you're working on? |

Thanks for the information. I have "Illusion" and it is great, but I wanted to see some of his other routines. I was pretty young when some of the specials first aired, so I can't remember them very well.
Las, do you have "inside" information from the Copperfield Camp regarding an official DVD release? I'd imagine that David has wanted to release the DVDs for a while now, but has likely had trouble securing the rights to the music used in the specials. He tends to favor popular music over original music (which he could "own"), so he's likely facing tough negotiations from publishers/lawyers who realize just how much money David makes each year! |

I don't think anyone would release them without permission.

That is for sure an unofficial release!
He is straight out asking for copies of the specials right on the page. Although let's not tell David. I want a set for myself before they all disappear and the seller reappears in jail! DJ |

I have all 20 specials on DVD...to be absolutely honest, they were compiled by taking home-recorded VHS copies from each special and putting them on disc... Eventually, I hope they do release the entire set... I've heard that they probably won't because the first few specials were produced by ABC and the rest were by CBS...the two won't reach an agreement to release the entire set.

I could be wrong, but I think only the first was on ABC. Then the run of "The Magic of David Copperfield" started on CBS.
If you are looking for the specials.. why don't you check out the Society of American Magicians (SAM) video library. I believe they have converted everything to DVD and you can rent them and copy them for yourself. I think they cost $15 per disc. Matt |

Technically, copying the specials (to any medium) without written consent from all parties is illegal. Well, sort of. When you tape something, the "legal" thing to do is immediately erase the tape after you have watched it once. These sort of things are near impossible to enforce because it would require having someone keeping track of what is on every VHS, DVD, and PVR at all times...which is impossible.

There are 4 volumes of Copperfield's VCDs which can be purchased in Asia. Its put up by a Malaysia Company but the quality is not good and some of it is not the full special. It looks like its being taped from TV and converted to VCDs , but its commercially available to the public. So far I think only Copperfield's "Illusions" DVD is the autorized one.

Matt I tried to rent some of Copperfield's DVD-R from S.A.M. earlier this year but found out by Ken Grady (The S.A.M. DVD librian) that S.A.M. has stopped renting out any television specials as of November 2005. Ron |
