What is your opinion on the sex of your doves? Do you have any preferences? and why?
What are the advantages and disadvantages?

I like the females. Females are generally smaller, and quieter... quieter coo, and less of it.

Males are stronger flyers.

I also agree with having females, in New York I had a few males and they coo all the time day and night. My doves I have now are both female and both picked up on the training. They do like to fight a lot. This coming month I am going to pickup two more and will do my best to pickup males.

I like the males best, they taste better than the females and they don't cry as much when you boil them...

LOL define "Less Stupid" I've had doves on and off for well over 20 years and the first pair I had MUST have been of the stupid breed LOL. I could put them outback in the yard OUTSIDE of a cage on a tree. they would sit there and walk up and down the branch and I'd go get them a bit later to bring them in. as long as they had food and water they'd just kind of stick around. of course these were the same two doves who would walk off the coffee table. DROP to the floor THEN start flapping thier wings.

for the most part they were "special" LOL. but to answer the question. Female doves is my prefrence for performing. they're quieter. Oh yes and they are also
less stupid
enjoy!!!

Interesting. I've found that my male doves seemed much more focused. They paid attention. The females eyes would wander about, gazing into nothingness, not really paying attention to what was going on. But the females were better when it came to less noise and weight.

I think you got some blonde ones then LOL. I guess it's jsut on a dove to dove basis. I've had both male and female that have worked fine. I do find that the female are not as loud. the trick is to figure out what the dove will do naturally and play off that for any little bits of business.
Enjoy!!

LOL.. But yeah Iagree Female Make Less Noise.. My males coo all day long and its forced me to sleep in a separate room.. and females are smaller than males so that can also be a plus...
And My males attack each other I guess to show dominance..
Peace

Frankly, it has nothing to do with which doves I use in a show. I go out to the aviary and get the best looking doves without a nest going.

The best imprinted doves I've had were males. It just worked out that way. When the imprinting began, they were too young for us to know which they were.

Females tend to move more and are more difficult to get to stay put on the perch alone. But the soultion to that is producing multiple doves to put on the perch.

I do think the females have a longer life in show biz. I don't have a lot of males to make it past 16-18 years. It is hardly rare for the females to get that old.

Mated pairs really seem to be the best setup to me.

I found it didn't make much difference. I used both interchangably. Most of what I did in dove magic was production, and as long as the wings were clipped any of the doves did just fine. Like Bob I prefered to use the ones that looked the best, avoiding a dove that looked a little "down" that day or molting, etc.
