Hello guys, while this is my first post I'm not new to these forums (just had to find a email provider that wasn't banned by the magic Café). I've recently taken my first steps into mentalism, and of course I'm very intrested in cold reading. I've looked through the search function, but I wasn't able to find an anwser to my biggest question: "Where do you buy books on cold reading?". I've looked at the booklist on http://www.deceptionary.com/aboutreading.html , and of that entire list, I can only get my hands on Passages (which I'm planning on getting). So if you guys can reccomend any specific books, maybe even a progression I should follow, AND where to find them that would be very much appreciated. Thank you for all your time.

Have you Googled any of the specific titles you found on the deceptionary list? Most of them should be available, I'm pretty sure.
Ian's site: http://www.ianrowland.com/ I don't know anything about "Passages," except that I know it's ubiquitous. I just checked, and you can get it for 75 cents at half.com. If there are any specific titles you can't find, let me know. |

I've learned that using the search function allows me to find many posts that I would have otherwise asked about myself. It does make it harder to get my 50 posts!

1) Pick a 'system' (palm reading, tarot, etc.) and stick to it. Learn a system (a lot simpler than you'd think, if you buy the right materials) and cold-reading will be a skill you develop on your own.
2) For a beginner, I'd recommend palm reading - EVERYONE has at least one palm so it's easy to practise. 3) Get 'Quick and Effective COld Reading' by Richard Webster 4) Read it once or twice, then buy 'Cold Front' by Doug Dyment from http://www.deceptionary.com 5) Cold Front mankes learning the Richard Webster system SOOOOO easy. 6) That's all you need! Don't go spending tons of money on loads of stuff you might not ever use... spend the $50 (approx) and get the two things I mentioned above |

Cold Front is a set of cards that you can carry around with you anywhere you go to study palm reading at any time. It uses the Webster Palm Reading system as its basis, hence you will also need Richard Webster's Quick & Effective Cold Reading book.
Cold Front takes the information in the book and distills it to its main points, and organises the details on the set of cards. The cards on their own will not make sense unless you already own Webster's book. Cold Front was great - I learned how to give quick palm readings (5 minutes each approx) in a matter of a couple of weeks. |

All the Richard Webster books, for example, can be found here. Many of the resources, admittedly, are difficult (or expensive) to obtain.

No, to clarify what I truly wanted, I was looking for a centralized place where I could find some, if not all of the good sources on cold reading. As ddyment metioned many of the books are very hard to find, and I have rarely come across a source who 1. is credible, or 2. sells at a reasonable price. As to those who offer "using the search function", I wish to point out that I have, and also to point out that a search function returns over 2589 matches on cold reading alone. Not to say that I will never use the search function, or the fact that I haven't already, just to clarify that somethings are better started fresh, and re-reviewed by people who may have a better insight into the question at the current date. As to those who have responded, I thank you for your time and all the help you've provided. If you have anymore tips or advice I'd love to hear it.

Taken from the intro...
Imagine meeting someone for the very first time and being able to reveal not only some of their innermost thoughts, but also details of personal events yet to come. It appears to be nothing less than a genuine demonstration of extrasensory perception, ESP. This is the power of cold reading – a process used by professional psychics, mind readers, fortunetellers, intuitive counselors and guides, and mentalists. In TRADECRAFT, you will learn how to harness this power to entertain your clients. This concise, how-to manual takes you step-by-step through the process of developing your cold reading abilities – from gaining a solid grasp of the underlying scientific principles at work to the practical application of specific methods and techniques. Moreover, you will even learn how to answer the most difficult questions readers face. This is a good ebook if you are a begginer or even a novice...

One word Richard Webster....(ok two words)
Anything by Richard is the business. In particular "Quick and effective cold reading" and "quick and effective numerology readings". Also buy a few genuine mainstream books on the tarot. Shrink |

My perspective on some of these books:
Tradecraft is a very basic introduction to cold reading; only those with little or no exposure to the art will find it beneficial. Lee Earle's Gentle Art of Cold Reading, like most of his stuff, is a very nicely produced package. It's also good for the beginner, but is really about stock reading, not cold reading (the terms are often confused, especially in the market targeted to magicians). Completely Cold, by Knepper and Tank, is either loved or hated by those who have it. It's an interesting (if highly-priced) idea, but there are lots of basic texts that should be mastered first. If you tried this method in, say, a psychic fair, where people are used to getting readings, you would likely not come across favourably. For those looking to do this on the cheap, there are a couple of sources you might wish to investigate. First is Ray Hyman's Cold Reading: How to Convince Strangers That You Know All About Them. This is available in several sources (see my resource list for details), and your local library (remember them?) should be able to get you a copy of at least one of them. A very simplified version of the information in this article can be found online here. The second is chapter seven of William Gresham's Monster Midway, which has been made available by the generous proprietor of The Deceptionary. You'll find it at the appropriate place in the aforementioned resource list. Because it doesn't cost $45+shipping, many people overlook it. This is much to their detriment, as it's one of the classic texts on cold reading.
