Hey, I was just wondering what it is that some of you "bizzare" magicians like to wear when performing. I'm surprised I haven't found any other posts on this subject.

Dark Illusionist,
When doing "bizarre", I wear a black silk turtleneck shirt, black pants, and an ornate pendant (either a crystal or a Celtic dagger). Needless to say, that is not what I wear when I do kids' shows! Although . . . . |

Cool. I tend to dress in dark clothing on a regular basis so that people recognize me as a magician. My biggest compliment was when I walked into a KFC and by just looking at my clothing some woman asked me if I was a magician.

Dark,
Good point. The late English magician Harold Taylor used to say that a magician should be identifiable as such even when he was not "on". The flamboyant Taylor would test this by walking across Trafalgar Square in the heart of London; his wife would watch from one side and, if at least half the people in the square didn't stop or turn, to look at him, he figured he didn't make a dramatic enough appearance. Another interesting thread here might be your very point, Dark: What do you wear when you're NOT performing. Worth thinking about. |

Hi Peter, you never cease to "amaze". I didn't know you dressed like you described, sounds cool. And I wonder how you could be putting up posts so early on a Sunday morning... Now that's Bizarre !!

Black!
Black good! Sorry about that...that's my best Karloff impersonation. Back to the subject at hand... I, too, wear black. Although I wear a Victorian coat (think undertaker, thin and long), black vest, black socks...you get the point. BUT! I wear a deep, cobalt blue cravat. It's still dark enough to conceal any gimmicks, but it breaks up the 6'5" wall of black standing before the audience... ...and, gee, it just brings out my eyes. |

I always dress all in black, performing or not. Lots of silver jewelry & my full length black leather trench coat (if the weather permits). Between my style of dress & being 6'4", I never fade into the background.

I always dress when presenting effects in a grey doublebreasted suit with black shirt and silver tie.
Understated enough to make the audience comfortable, yet shows that I am a little over the conventional norm. |

Dark illusionist brought up something I have been toying with the idea of. On one of the custom /special effects contact lens sites, I saw a pair that are a black and white spiral, like one of those "hypnosis wheels" (what do you call those things, anyway?). What if you were wearing sunglasses as you started to do a mental effect, approached the spectator, and then took off the glasses as you said "look into my eyes"? I've been thinking after the initial shock this might produce an unwanted comedy element if you are going for deep bizarre. Any thoughts?

Speaking of contacts, geez, look at the prices of these!
Now that's some expensive stuff! Although I would love to have the spinning hypnosis wheel thingy, it would be quite a while if I were to get myself a pair. Well, then again. I just found a pair of them for $20. See, there they are the second on the list.
Coming soon... Who knows!

Whoa, great links, Scheda! I wear contacts regularly (and actually need some new ones) and now I am totally stuck—there are so many choices (and some of those prices are looow for lenses). Some of those effects are just too cool to be able to pass up easily...

Yeah 9mmfx is great. I want red demon lenses soooo bad. I think the ones that are 20 are 20 per lens. Also, remember you get what you pay for. The cheap ones are stamped on the lens while the expensive ones are hand painted and look stunning.
I am currently looking for a nice tight leather vest. Can anybody recommend a leather dealer or two? ...Hey all I just thought I would bring this topic back for the folks who missed it. Jonathsn

Jonathan,
go to my site http://www.bizarremagick.com and check under the Little Shops of Horror page. There are at least two gothic clothiers there. Jeanie Nitro and Siren. They should have what you are looking for. Doug

My costume depends upon the routine that I am doing. As a spirit medium, I wear a black turtleneck with a bronze spiral medallion. As the exorcist, I wear a conservative gray herringbone shirt and two crosses around my neck. (The herringbone pattern is necessary because of a micro-thread problem across my chest.)
For the Realm of the Pharaohs, I wear a black shirt with an ankh necklace that I use in the routine. Most of my costumes tend toward the black or gray tones. However, I am working on a gypsy fortune-telling routine that will have a sort-of gypsy costume.

I wear all white...
when painting the sets of the haunted mansion. muahahahaha. Ive got a great tip for anybody who wants black cloths. Instead of going to hot topick and haveing people think your a poser, save money, and ridicule, by going to sears. No I'm not kidding I bought some great Black pants and my absolute favorite (nice looking) black shirt in the world. You can get anything at sears. Also if you need a black coat why not go to burlington coat factery? they've got sweet prices and and a nice selection. Anybody else shop at sears? Jonathan

Something I am working on but have not worn yet is a long red robe and a matching but separate red hood with a black cloth mesh that hides the face. I am aiming for the look of a ceremonial magician or wizard, but wanted something that showed up better than black. The robe has its edges rimmed with a wide band of gold and silver crossed thread. It is covered with a variety of mystical and alchemical symbols that I painted on with fabric paint and latin phrases in runes along the bottom. I am still working on adding all the symbols. When I am done adding them, I am going to embroider over them with gold metallic thread (the fabric paint gives the embroidery a pattern to follow and makes it show up better).
BTW anyone looking for a quick and cheap black robe of decent quality, you can find choir and graduation gowns in many second-hand clothing shops for only a few bucks. I made my first "wizard robe" by buying one of these and covering it with adhesive glow-in-the-dark stars. On the "all white" clothing point - I think you might appear a bit too much like a member of a certain "clan" if you wore such a thing, especially if you wore a hood. Not a mistake I would like to make. -bigwolf {*}

Oddly enough i wear a pair of blue jeans and a polo shirt I guess I try to create the illusion of (this guy looks just too normal) in my view when somone wear's gothic type clothes people tend to discredit him cause they think he's trying to create the mistyque but a average looking guy doing the wink wink supernatural, kind of makes you think of the devil in disguise. lol But I also have several occult tatoo's that make people reel a little too.

that's a good point vovin. I also wear blue jeans about 50 percent of the time. the problem with being a young magician. especialy a young dark magician is that there are people my age who dress this way not becaus there magicians but just because they want attention. i see these people wherever I go. I don't have any peirces or tatoos (and plan on remaining that way) but tonge rings are a good example of how the publick catches on to something and it is no longer unique. a long time ago someone could put a needle through there secretly peirced tounge and it was shocking. Last summer i saw someone do needle through tonge and a girl in the audience said "o he probably just has a peiced tounge."
as vovin stated sometimes less is more. Jonathan
