OK Don...saw the DVD and I believe every word.

But what about 'WE WHO ARE ANTSY'....meaning I noticed on your Hollywood Blvd stint you had what I would consider a decent mob pretty quickly, a few deep or more...personally I would get antsy that it was time to start the 'real' show and get closer to the 1st hat.

So, QUESTION: What is your method to make the call as to when you end the gathering of the tip and get to work? Knowing me as well as I do...I'd gather 10 folks and pull out the Puppet!

By the way...excellent pitch Don. I used to do it with a Midget...well...I didn't know a Midget but I told 'em I did and that he would be right out and Float above the heads of the crowd...hahaha...got that one from Sindell's Sideshow, Coney in the early 1950's.

Later my friend.

Hi Doug,
Well first off remember I did this for a Jam Auction not for busking,so I wanted a BIG tip to fill the room up.

I think its a personial call.Just go into your show when you think you have enough people to get a FAT HAT.

Hope this answered your question and thanks for the post Doug.
Later,Don

Thanks Don...it was amazing how FAST your method built the crowd! Highly recommended.

Sure wish I was there during your days at the Jam Auction. Someday I want to hear about the JA on Fremont Street. Must have been a kick. I could have used you when I had my big Dime Museum at tahoe right next to the Casinos. Couldn't get them in the door with all the slot action nearby.

Thanks again
Doug

Magicpitch: All that will do is cause me to charge him more when I teach him what else I know that I haven't taught him yet. Smile.

Don,
Tell the story about how you built a tip in Vegas at 3 am in the snow without a soul in sight.

Magicpitch: Maybe the run of the mill Fuzzles are that price...mine are remote controlled from a central remote location and when 30 are put together they recreate the kick line of the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes....thus I get $6.25 each. Smile

Doug, I see that you are the guy that beat me out of that figure on eBay! Dang, if I only had two dollars more.

To answer your question, work Don’s bit to build the edge and when it is the size you want to perform for then segue into your show. It’s up to you and your comfort zone and the amount of foot traffic. If you have everyone in sight then go for it!

I tend to do short shows for a smaller edge than, say, Gazzo. I’ve watched Gazzo work for a half an hour or more just getting a big edge.

I try for 20 people but will start with something over 10 knowing that others will stop.

Don’s DVD is pure gold and works (kind of like your ‘zibit instructions!)!

Hi Harry! BUT You are WRONG my friend. I did not buy a figure on eBay. I had mine Custom made. I was bidding so I could get a NEAR (not exact) duplicate...but I lost interest. I since bought the exclusive to the character. There is only the one other that is similar. Mine has some other tricks as well.

I'll connect you for a GREAT deal if you like. Forget ebay.

That is my problem with eBay. I get bored with the bidding game.

I know what an item is worth (at least to me), I set the bid, and I don't look again until the auction is over. Needless to say I often loose by a buck or five!

I don't worry because I have more "stuff" than I'll ever use. I have managed to replace some “oldies” that I used to perform and had to stop because they got worn out and could not be replaced.

Now I need to recycle some of my stuff (let others have at it!). Unfortunately, I tend to buy high end, good quality, and durable things because I tend to make them work for a year or two before changing the act and people here on the Café want you to give it away.

I liked the look of your custom made. I have a custom made One-eyed figure (UFO driver). Eye left to right (not self centering), eye winks, and the eyebrow wiggles. It has a ball neck and a slot mouth. I had it made in 1963 by a guy a puppet maker in Albuquerque, NM (that was about when the "one eye, one horned, flying purple people eater" song was out). I used the music of the song to introduce my little guy. He still looks new after all these years!

Hey hook me up with your dealer and maybe I'll start doing vent again. I'm getting old and slow but still do a mean distant voice.
