Dear all,
I've loved the Asrah illusion ever since I was young when I saw my dad perform it... However the illusion requires a big base and a lot of hook ups which is not practical for my kind of work. I would like to ask if any one has experience with the Gossemer Flight from Owens Magic? The b*** looks extremely thin in the pic. I have seen the European Asrah from Tilford but am not sure how is it possible to hide the gal away unless it is performed on a platform stage with audiences underneath. Regards, Jeremy |

Gossamer's is using B/A to hide the girl which is why the b*** looks so thin. They are both fine effects but not for a banquet or hall and really only good on a stage. Just my opinion, but if you are only going to do it on a stage you might as well use the old method. I used to do the Asrah out of a sawing in half...no base and a cool ending to the sawing...

Hi Shawn,
Thanks a lot for the comments. I first considered the Owen's couch cause it packs really small and the conventional b*** is too big to carry around. Great idea to do it with the sawing in half...I have a video of Gossammer doing the asrah but he doesn't seem to be using that Owen's couch... So is the foldable couch Gossammer's idea or what makes it called the Gossammer's flight? Regards, Jeremy |

"Great idea to do it with the sawing in half." - I think Siegfried & Roy where the first to do this...

Hey Jeremy,
The foldable couch is not the feature that makes it a Gossamer. Gossamer is not actually a person it's a word that means ethereal: characterized by unusual lightness and delicacy. The dictionary refers to gossamer as a light, thin, filmy like cloth. This word was used to name the effect as it applies to the form used in the illusion. The table is clever in that it is also the ATA case used for shipping but I don't believe it is unique to this particular illusion. Hi el rafael, I thought that S&R did the Aga levitation out of the sawing in half. I could be wrong but I recall they did a real cool sawing with a huge circular saw blade that chopped down several times and after the separation portion of the effect, during the restoration the prop was moved upstage to connect with an Aga apparatus for the conventional style levitation. If they did do the Asrah, I missed seeing it. I am sure I am not the first to use the Asrah in a sawing, just thought it was a great way to do it... especially with a Gossamer or European Asrah gimmick in a situation where the standard method would be difficult or impossible to perform. Cheers to you both, Shawn Farquhar |

Shawn,
The S&R sawing did finish with an asrah. I seem to remember an aga style levitation first then the girl sinks back into the sawing prop, is covered with cloth and into asrah... I have it on tape somewhere and I am sure that's the order of the illusion. Cheers, Mark

Yes, that is the sequence of the illusion. I remember seeing it on a S & R video... But I guess it may be a classic application....
Ha ha ha, I also thought that the Gossammer Flight had something to do with Peter Gossammer... Thanks Shawn for the info... Regards, Jeremy |

Thanks Mark,
I saw the show live and still don't recall but tonight I pulled out the video and lo and behold there it is... Asrah and all... Cheers, Shawn |

I've always thought that the Gossamer Flight table COULD be a great idea if there were some REASON for the netting and cloth. The only Idea I could come up with was some kind of cagey box with sides that fold up in front, and a rear section that is black... All of which makes ZERO sense of course, unless maybe it was some cargo cage themed routine.
I always thought the net front looked somewhat like a ping pong or volley ball net and toyed with the idea of a vignette where the levitation ends up happening on the ping pong table. In the Edmund Spears Fumanchu book he talks about a kind of deceptive table that used M*****S in such a way that one ended up with a thin looking table top, but the background could be any color.
Leaping Lizards!!! Who knew it was possible.

Jack and Dove Goldfinger have their name in ribbon across the front and it looks great. Makes sense and does the job without looking like a ping pong net!
