Hello...does any one do this in their card act? The new ones from Viking are great . How do you get into the sequence? On the Jeff Sheridan dvd #1 ,he has a great and easy way to get into the diminishing part. I have spent about a week of working on the get into and I am not getting anywhere. I don't want to do a hip steal ..... I might have to go with the Sheridan way. He has been doing this for about 30 years and I think it is a logical and easy way to start the sequence.

You could have the card rise out from a pocket or produce it from behind your lapel and the like. You know what comes next.

Sheridan does his split fan act and then he looks in the bag he just threw all his fans into.....he notices something strange ....he pulls out a card that is smaller than the rest ..... he pantomimes ....how did that get in their?......he pulls out a regular size card to show the difference ....and begins the diminishing part of the act......
simple and logical... |

I've not seen Sheidan's routine, however it sounds a lot like mine. I have a pocket holding the diminishing cards inside my hat. After doing my other card manipulations, I reach into the hat and take out the diminishing cards and fan them. Then take out a regular card and compare the two. Each time the fan gets smaller I reach in the hat to take out a normal sized card to compare them and at the same time ditch each diminishing fan.

I have been playing around with a few new ways to get into it ....I'll post them in a week or so after I get a grip on what I am trying to do..... I always tought that this is a great end phase or middle phase in a card act.....

I uses Tommy Wonder's Diminishing Cards, Its self contained and one of the most visual one..the fan of cards visually diminishes in the performer's hand. Tommy makes a new version that when the fan diminishes, the pips of the cards also diminishes...The Al Baker's version have all the cards stuck together and I think its a down side as you can't seperate the cards to show them that they are individual seperate cards...I have another version whereby it uses pockets on the back of the cards, these cards have bicycle backs and as it diminishes, the card's size really shrink...just a few thoughts...

I end my card manipulation routine with dimishing cards.
I have been using the Al Baker style Diminishing Cards for many years. The ones that Viking Magic sell are excellent. I have also used the non-gimmicked way to diminish the cards, but the audience doesn't care. I do split fans and single productions, and drop the crds into either a top hat, doctor's bg or other receptacle. I then pick up one card (actually the Al Baker set) and proceed from there. After I vanish the last (smallest card), I steal Tony Clark's Jumbo Fan production and produce that. Standing there for a moment with the jumbo fan is a great applause cue. Lou |

I suggest you put some foam in the receptical with a slit for the Baker set., put you fan of normal cards in the hat and steal the baker set with at least 8 cards on the face. Bring them out and fan, then go into the diminishing routine.
Sheridan version sounds like the Late Neil Foster's routine for his misers dream sequence. I believe you should have more then just a single card to start the routine with. Depending on your clothing, you could produce some cards and then just bring out the Baker set from you pocket and go into the routine. Norm Nielsen uses this type of card recovery in his stage act to replenish his next set for card productions. Or you could make it look like magic that they entered the pocket by vanishing a fan with a throw toward the pocket and pull out the Baker set. |

I use Al Baker diminishing cards from Viking Also
The new sets with complete faces are brilliant I do a quick 6 card repeat twice counting the cards & as a finale do a 12 count finish -plays much stronger & is not as tedious as std version doing 4 or 5 counts!! after dropping the cards into a hat I have on a small table - I then grab the diminish set (set up in hat) with fold card open & 1 std playing card so Im holding 1 in each hand-I then proceed with the diminish & compare card sizes putting this card back into the hat -this repeats as I ditch etc & reshow the original card for sizing- for my finale I grab a small pile of glitter confetti as last card diminishes / vanishes- This version I have used for years-plays very strong in clubs as well as on the street where I fine tuned this for a year before performing in a theatre I don't use this in every show but always plays well-can be done to music with many variations as described Good luck on using this very clever effect! |

My fanning bit is a bit old fasioned but I get a good response from it, I like to use all the color changes etc. at the end I pharo the deck and make a huge fan and then by changing the axis of my thumb the cards get smaller and smaller much in the same way that Cardini did.Shimada does this well too.

I do it this way. I have mu baker set in my receptacle or pocket. I make from a normal deck a giant fan (faro two halve together and fan) I then strip of the top part and put in my receptacle - pocket and palm the gimmick (in righthand). now I close the fan and take away the cards - at the same time I leave the gimmick in sight. when I have put away the mormal cards I see the smaller cards and fan them. that's my get into
