Is anyone familiar with the routines on the new L&L dvd on finger ring magic? The free "Greatest Collection of Magic" Vol 2 DVD sort of "pushed" me over to order it yesterday . I know that these are not new but a compliation of previously released material. I've heard great things about Dan Fleshman plus Mark Leveridge's Ring and string routines.

I just got the vol with Ring Magic. When I first got it I only had a chance to watch the first two tricks on the dvd. After watching those two and turing it off I knew that my money had been spent very wisely. Every routine on it is great. There are plenty of Ring and Rope routines and moves, a couple of Ring and Wand bits, and then some other really great bits with a ring. I recommend it to anyone that is interested in ring magic. I also got Greg Wilson's Ring Leader in the same purchase which is just full, and I mean full of Ring and Rope material. He shows loads of moves as well as like two or three full routines. Again, a must for anyone interested in ring magic. Two thumbs way up!!

Buddy,
I'm also interested in this DVD. However, I'm not clear about your post where you say you got Ring Leader in the same purchase. Do you mean that you purchased Ring Leader as a separate DVD with the Finger Ring Magic DVD, or are you referring to the fact that Greg Wilson's material is include ON the Finger Ring Magic DVD. The main reason I was interested was that I saw Greg Wilson's Ring Leader is included on the DVD but wasn't sure how abbreviated his material is as he has the separate $49.95 DVD dedicated to Ring Leader already out on the market. I can't imagine that this compilation contains the same amount of content. Hope this makes sense. Let us know. Thanks. |

I have Ring Leader and the L&L mix tape. For overall value the tape from L&L can't be beat.
A great variety of material and you can't beat the price. |

My copy should be here from L&L any day now. With such a diverse mix, I hope that many of the routines are "impromptu" in nature. It just seems natural to perform something "magical" by borrowing a personal item from your spectator. That element just adds so much to the strength of the effect.

I was thinking of getting this to add to my impromptu repertoire. I'm a card man for the most part and haven't really gotten into coin/ring magic or the likes. Do the effects on this require similar moves to coin magic, and would it be suitable for a beginner in coin/ring work? Thanks.

Does anyone else think that L&L recycling old material and compiling them onto new dvds is a bit cheeky?
We've got 25 "new" volumes of material that was previously on other dvds to look forward to and the only work that was required was compiling the material and creating a new menu. I know that they are cheaper than normal L&L dvds, but with almost no production cost the profit must be huge.

I'm not bothered by it at all. For those looking for material on a certain subject or those without many DVD's it's a heck of a deal. Especially for the price. Obviously the market will determine if this is a wise project for them. It's a bit like the music industry repackaging collections of songs by different bands together on a single album/cd.

So if you were interested in just ring magic for instance would you rather go and purchase every individual video??? Talk about profit.
I think it is a deal and a half for the consumer. |

All depends. If the only thing you want to dod is a ring ans string routine, you cannot go wrong with Ring Leader, in my opinion it is the strongest ring and string routine out there.
But on the L&L DVD you have Dan Fleishman's fantastic ring and sting, Jay Sankey's Stiring Silver and Nest Egg, a couple of Ring and Wand routines, some ring and finger magic, a whole veriety of routines that can be performed almost anywhere. Gregory Wilson also has two nice pieces on the DVD. I'm leaving a lot out, I know. I own both. Tony |

To clarify Ring Leader by Greg Wilson is not on the Finger Ring(L&L)DVD. Greg Wilson performs Ring Thing by Garret Thomas on it. Greg does not do any thing on this compilation DVD that involves a rind AND a string. If one wants to do a ring and string routine they could learn a great deal from either Ring Leader or the L&L Finer Ring DVD.
The L&L Finger Ring DVD is one of the best purchases in magic I have made in a long time. (I got quarter-in-soda can as a gift, its a lotta fun too). Any way, This tape teaches sooooo much stuff with rings it isn't funny. There's ring-and-: spoon, card box/ match box, wand, coin, hanky, safety pin, glass, and oh yeah...string. The nice thing about this DVD is that with a little thought some one can surely be able to take the many moves and the various props that are shown on this treatise and put together a routine they could call their own. Personally, I loved this L&L DVD and plan on purchasing more from the series on some of the other topics that interest me the most: like dollar bill, bill-in-lemon, and ambitious card. |

If I decided to get the remaining material that I don't already have, I'd rather buy the original videos it came from not the compilation version. Also, as far as finger ring magic goes, I'm surprised not to see David Regal's "There and Back" on the DVD... that is a very nice routine.

I really like this series. Initially I had the same thoughts as Nick23 and I can really understand some disappointment if you already own a lot of the L&L vids.
I own a few, but for the most part there is a lot of material I missed. So its still a good deal for me. The C/S/B Gaffed Coins video is so good it forced me to drop a line to Lassen for a Morgan Silver Set. Talk about where your money goes, sheesh. |

Sorry for the confusion. I bought Ring Leader and the L&L Ring Magic dvd's seperate but in the same purchase. Greg's ring and string material is not even mentioned on the L&L dvd. He does show a really nice routine with a ring though including Garrett Thomas' woderful Ring Thing. As for which one to get if you are thinking about both, it depends on if you are looking for just Ring and String material or Ring Magic in general. L&L has both, but Greg teaches loads of moves on Ring Leader. Both are great and very wise investments. I think the idea of puting a dvd out on one subject is a good idea. It gives the viewer a nice compilation of magic they can pick and choose from. I would kinda stink to buy the same material twice. It is only $20 though and most will still get something they did not have unless they have the entire L&L library, which if you did, you would not need to buy this anyway.

The L&L Finger Ring dvd is fantastic. An incredible amount of invaluable information for a low price. Even though I have some of the dvds these clips are culled from, there is still plenty of material that I didn't have which made it a completely worth while purchase.
Highly recommended.

On 2006-02-26 10:38, Nick23 wrote: Nick, I see where you are coming from. But, looked at in a slightly different perspective might cause such a purchase to be quite valuable and worthwhile. For instance: Even if the cost is minimal to L&L, the VALUE to you as a magician in being able to quickly find just the routine or part of an effect that you are looking for, is just of incalculable value to you. Your time savings alone makes these converted disks a must have. And, regardless of whether or not these are tape conversions (or are just snatched off of exisiting DVDs), having compilations of various types of effects is equally valuable to you as a magician because you can easily compare all and pick out the best of each. Additionally, you don't find yourself spending your money on a DVD that has (for instance), lots of card magic on it, just so you can learn the one rope routine for which you had to buy the DVD. Under such circumstances, a compilation DVD is actually a better buy for you and actually saves you money because everything on the DVD is of value to YOU and you are not forced to buy useless (to you) information. And, in the end, regardless of what we might think about the project, the market forces will ultimately determine if this was a "good thing". If they do, the DVD will be a commercial success; if they don't, the DVD will languish on the shelves at L&L. And this determination will be made regardless of the profit that L&L hopes is built into the venture. Just, IMHO. Mike
