Matilda, the World's Oldest Chicken died at age sixteen. On February 11, 2006, she succumbed to heart failure.
For her story and photo see: http://mortanddonna.com/matilda.html She was from Alabama and was used in a magic act by members of Ring 35. On October 17, 2005, she made her farewell magical appearance. In describing Matilda, one of her fans said, "Matilda is a soul who just happens to be in a chicken's body." As a direct result of Matilda’s induction into Guinness World Records, she was a guest of Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show" in an episode that taped and aired on September 9, 2004. Your help is needed to be sure that her magical story gets published in "The Guinness Book Of World Records". It was only reasonable that the world's oldest chicken was a Magic Chicken. Please check out her site above. Information is available from: Mort The Mystifying and Donna Post Office Box 3353 Hueytown, Alabama 35023 (Yes, Hueytown is where the fast race car divers are found. They drive fast and turn left.) Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Each year, Guinness selects which records will be published, and Matilda's record has not yet been chosen. We are encouraging everyone to please contact Guinness and request that Matilda's record as World's Oldest Living Chicken be included. Being a died in the feathers Chicken Fan from way back RIP Matilda!
I had two Rhode Island Reds as Pets and egg suppliers and were great to have around. They would perch on your arm if you held it out. They were hilariouis to watch in the yard taking their dirt baths and scrunching down flat anytime a plane went over (they thought it was a chicken hawk I reckon). Cluckie and Pluckie were turned over to a Riding Stable to winter there when it got VERY cold one year (Tahoe). They had lots of chickens and a warm pen. In Spring we went to pick them up...there were no chickens...they had eaten them all!!! aaahhhhhhhhhhhhh! So in the name of Cluckie and Pluckie we salute the enchanted life of a magical bird...descended from the Dinosaurs via Middle Earth. We'll vote. Doug

I had seven Reds growing up Rural Texas. I'm not sure if they were my project as much as I was their's. We had a a great time the eight of us. One of them laid a three yolk egg.
I've always had an affinity for those birds and MATILDA gets my vote! Bob I've known about you and Lucy's involvement with animals but didn't know ya'll had such a great creature. Thanks for caring for her and sharing that with us. Yeah she gets my vote. |

Thank you for your support.
Lucy and I did not own Matilda. She belonged to the Bartons (Mort and Donna above). Or, perhaps more correctly, they worked for her! Lucy and I do enjoy animals and use them in our magic. Currently we only have five horses, three goats, a goose, a rooster, a pearl guinnae, some ducks, three dogs, two cats and too many doves to count. Prop builders hate to see us coming! Lucy has a "Goat to Goose" that was not generally available. Prop builders just had no experience building one! How strange! Wait until she gets her elephant. Lucy is the only M.D. on the animal shelter board here. But she is also the only one with three live unicorns! We have to pick friends that think outside the cage! (My daughter called this morning from the ranch in Wyoming with training problems for her raccoon. How normal!) Bob |

I consider Mort and Donna to be friends, and I know that Matilda's passing was hard for them. That chicken surely had a wonderful life and made a lot of people smile and laugh, over and over again.
Keep the votes coming! ~michael (former caretaker of many, many birds)

My condolences to Mort and Donna. I have six hens out back myself. I have a great love of chickens, always have. I'm very lucky to live where I do that the city and neighbors think nothing of it. No real preditors but an opossum has spent a night or two sleeping in their nest box. It was a young one when I first caught it there. Since then the girls just stay clear til it goes.
Do you think a banty would fit in a duck/ rabbit pan? Dr. Solar

Donna and I truly appreciate not only the condolences from our brothers and sisters in magic, but also their efforts in bombarding Guinness World Records with requests to see Matilda's record as World's Oldest Living Chicken appear in "The Guinness Book Of World Records".
Each year, Guinness selects which records will be published. Preference is given to records they feel will sell the most books. If there are enough requests to see Matilda's record published, Guinness might be influenced to finally make her record more accessible to the public. Once again, I will submit the contact information for Guinness, which is as follows: Guinness World Records Limited 338 Euston Road London NW1 3BD FAX +44 (0)20 7891 4501 Email: crm@guinnessworldrecords.com As Guinness maintains such a large volume of records, I would recommend including Matilda's Claim Identification Number, which is #4910, in any correspondence sent to Guinness on her behalf. Thanks again for taking time to contact Guinness. For sixteen years, Matilda lovingly gave of her time and talents. Her inclusion in the book would ensure her legend continues. I talked with Donna this morning. She was very impressed with the caring concern coming from fellow magicians here on The Café.
I was surprised to hear how many sympathy cards with comments the Bartons had received for Matilda. Donna is behind acknowledging them on Matilda's website. She is getting the ones up that she can as time allows. It is great to know that so many of you feel the way you do about the animals that share magicians' acts. Matilda was an institution. She caused many smiles in her career. Thank you. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander PS --- Today Michael tells me he expects the ceremony to be around 3:30 PM in Birmingham August 5th. He does not know if it will be indoors or outside until he gets a better idea the number of people expected to attend. Current plans are for it being at the Birmingham Hilton. Birmingham is called "The Magic City". The website for Ring 35 is Magic City Magic Club aka MCMC. |
