I like performing Le Arche de Triomphe by Guy Hollingworth. I learned it from his London Collection video, and it's now a regular part of my repertoire. It takes place all in the hands, and for a kicker ending the three mates of the free selection are produced in the end of the effect. I get awesome reactions for this one piece.

I do a version demonstrated by Brad Burt on his video using a semi Zarrow shuffle, but by the sounds of it there are many just as effective and easier ways out there!

Triumph is excellent!!! However, there is another excellent effect on the 'Easy to Master Card Miracles' Series (Volume 5), which is called 'Out of Sight, Out of Mind' by Dai Vernon as well. Triumph kills everyone, while Out of Sight, Out of Mind fries them once more, leaving them breathless

It's also found in The Very Best Of Jay Sankey Volume 2 - DVD (I have all three--the guy's amazing, I haven't had time to absorb all the great stuff).

I think the Puerto Rican Triumph, that Daryl does, is a killer.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Bannons "Play it Straight Triumph". It's completely self working and is one of the strongest I've ever seen!

I have a routine in which I begin with Howard Flint's Flash Opener, in which a face-up/face-down riffle-shuffled deck straightens itself; no selection. I present it as the first trick I learned as a kid, when I shuffled that way to "really mix up the cards". Later in the routine I do Vernon's Triumph using the stripout shuffle from Stars of Magic, explaining that this is how my daughter shuffled when she asked me to do a card trick for her--I tell the audience that my wife says it's genetic, while I maintain that it's environmental. This plays extremely strong because the methods are completely different, and although the results are virtually identical the second is still unexpected.
By the way, a few years ago I heard of an online poll of magicians on the greatest card trick ever created. Triumph and Out Of This World were virtually neck-and-neck and far ahead of everything else. |

Excuse my ignorance, but could someone describe the effect of a generic Triumph trick? I've heard about it many times, but have do not know what the effect is.

There are two basic versions, one with a selection and one without. Without a selection, the deck is hopelessly mixed up with some of the cards face up and some face down. In a instant, all the cards face the same way. With a selection, the same thing happens, except that all the cards face the same way with the exception of the selection--the lone reversed card in the deck at the end. It is one of the strongest pieces of card magic you can do for a layperson.
