HI guys,
I'm sure you all know that a dmx terminator plug is a resistor soldered across pins 2 and 3. Now what I wanted to know is some people say that should be a 100 ohms resistor, some say it should be a 120 ohms resistor. Can any of you tell me which is the correct value ? |

120 ohm is the industry standard for DMX512 impedance termination. Most problems come from the use of standard mic cables and 5 to 3 pin adaptors. I have not had problems with short runs.
Here is a good source for an overview as opposed to the abundant "DJ lighting" sites filled with incorrect information. http://www.tvtechnology.com/features/let......or.shtml

You may also be interested in what Doug Fleenor's idea of a terminator is, he see's a terminator as much more than a resistor across a couple of pins.
Using Doug's terminator is standard practice for large scale systems. http://www.dfd.com/term.html Doug's site is also worth a look around, he's known around the world as "Dr. DMX".....when it comes to DMX knowledge, he's da' man. |

120 ohm is standard. Take a look on line ( ebay ) - sometimes you can find them pretty cheap.
We carry a few extra while on the road - it seems that they are always the first thing to get lost.

This information was found in the High End Systems Technobeam user manual found at ftp://ftp.highend.com/pub/Products/Techn......beam.pdf
I hope this helps, Fitz Technobeam® User Manual Overview of Controller Operation 2-5 Terminators The last device on each link must have a 120 ohm, 1/4 watt (minimum) terminator attached to its Data Out connector. You can construct terminators by following the instructions below: Figure 2-4. Constructing a data cable terminator. 120? 1. Obtain a male XLR connector. 2. Disassemble the connector. 3. Solder a 120 ohm resistor, minimum of 1/4 watt, between pins 2 and 3. 4. Reassemble the connector. 5. Install the terminator in the Data Out port of the last device in the link.
