There is a scene the Houdini movie that had a Guillotine (Lester Lake type?) routine where after the cut, the magician pats the assistant's head and a dummy head falls off and she stands up fine from behind the illusion. Now, there is a camera cut at a critical time, so I suspect that they cut the film and swapped heads. But, if someone could make it work like that on stage, it would be neat. I know it wouldn't be angle proof, though.
FYI, I am not looking to make or purchase such an illusion, it is just an idea I had. |

The Monster Guillotine might be what you're looking for. Can't do the exact effect that you describe, but it's close. Checkout this link: http://www.wellingtonent.com/document/wellprod.html

I had seen the full size Guillotine version done when I was young. It was not the low profile head chopper seen in the Houdini movie.
As best I remember, the "head" came off immediately, but I'm not certain.

For the illusion of the ACTUAL HEAD falling....Look for the "Will Rock" monster guillotine. Also as used by Alice Cooper during his 1970's stage shows (w/Randi assisting).
RE: "Houdini" film: OF COURSE there was an edit, and the head was switched. ..and I HOPE you all know who the uncredited magician was - that did the Lester Lake Guillotine in the film. |
