What do you do for a silk opener? I like to use "Knots off Silk" before I go into a more serious silk production routine. It gets laughs from the audience and I use it the same way a speaker would use an opening joke before going into his or her speech.
Your thoughts? |

Knots Off Silk is a great opener and is available in about ten colors so you can go from there into about any silk routine. (I usually get a dove next.) Then I can go to THIS (Improved) by just adding more silks.
Bob Sanders Magic By Sander I noticed the "From Nashville not Texas" --- Is from the song "All My EXs Live in Texas" That's why I live in Tennessee? LOL |

No Bob, I had an PM from a guy who lived in Texas who asked if I was the Darkwing from Texas. He went on to explained that there was a magic dealer who was known as Darkwing who lived in Texas who had a less that stellar reputation and may have ripped off some other effects and magicians. I told him that I have lived and worked in the Nashville area all my life and was not the Darkwing from Texas in question. It led me to think maybe I may want to put a small disclaimer at the bottom of all my post just to let everyone know I'm the Darkwing from Nashville. I got the nickname from a great boss I used to work with. He used to call me DW and when the cartoon came along Darkwing Duck, well the name stuck.
As a side note, I do have an ex and she, believe it or not, lives in Birmingham Ala. which is as close to Nashville as I would like to have her. |

Bob what is, "Then I can go to THIS (Improved) by just adding more silks". Not sure what you meant by that. When Iwas doing silks I opened with a silk to cane, blendo, and ended with a 20th century silks, all to music. DW what type of act do you do?

Steven,
Here you go. THIS (Improved) is one of the best utility props available for a silk routine. I think of it as a square circle at your finger tips. It will give you about two quarts load capacity without boxes and tubes. And it can be done anywhere in the act. Read these posts and should help. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......4&45 Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

I use Billy McComb's Half Dyed Hank as a silk opener. Always gets a great response.

Thanks Bob. I forgot I posted in this forum and that is why the dates are far apart. I have read other people talk about THIS and did not know. So thanks for clearing that up for me.

Steven,
One of the nice things about THIS as well as the THIS (Improved) is that it leaves you clean. Another ending for THIS (Improved) is to put it all in a blendo and that gives you another transposition you can follow with a body load. (OK --- I'm a dove man! But it could be a flag staff, flowers or anything else.) Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Silk opener! Here is a simple (embarrassingly simple) opening routine I used to perform back in the day (and still do in a pinch!).
- Instant, one-hand, appearance of a 22-inch silk scarf (similar to the one on the Tomsoni clip, right out of Rice). - Scarf is flourished then split into two (an old General Grant bit). - One scarf is placed over the forearm and the other scarf is knotted only to have the knot keep untying. - Scarf on arm is added to scarf held and both are simply dropped (the corner of one is held). They fall proving to be tied together (from Slidini). - The two are bundled together only to find a stemmed-glass full of wine within the bundle. - Audience is toasted as the wine is drunk (proving it real). ---Applause cue, empty wine glass is held in the right hand (head high), and the two scarves are held in the left (head high). Slight bow and move on to next sequence. Props: two 22-inch silk scarves, one wine glass with stem, one square of Saran Wrap, four rubber bands, one holdout (mine is a homemade affair working on a pendulum principle, made from one suction cup, a safety pin, and a length of monofilament). Time is about three minutes but can be paced for five. The last time I performed this routine was four years ago at Hilton Head Island at a Pub. I was asked by the owner (a friend) to front the band. I went to Wall-Mart and bought the necessary items and put an act together literally at the last minute. This was my opening bit (moved to a Miser’s Dream using the wine glass as a receptacle). Sorry, but all my stuff tends to be easy!

Thanks Frank, The routine as outlined is more about pacing and timing than “moves”. It is technically easier to perform than say, a Cups and Balls routine.
The production and splitting of the silks is almost automatic. All that is needed is a loose finger palm. The self-untying silk is everywhere in the literature (from Al Baker to Aldo Colombini to Tarbell), and again, is almost self-working. The first “move” comes with the two silks being tied together instantly. This is the bringing of the hands together to grab an elastic band. The final steal of the glass is almost impossible to miss. You have two big 22-inch silks covering you. It is "eye candy" but technically easy!

Can someone post a link to more information on THIS? I've never heard of it, and feel like the receiving end of an Abbott and Costello routine!
Thanks, Daniel |

Daniel,
For a guy who makes coffee a "hobby" THIS and THIS (Improved) will be an easy next step. I'm on the road for a few days. But call me or email me next week (during the week) and we can talk about it. On an open forum, we have said about what can be said. It's a great prop. It is my opener for this week's hotel shows. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

I just made several pairs of 30" "Slydini silks" for a few customers and I think I might start using them myself for larger audiences. Does anyone else use huge silks for the "Slydini silks" on stage?
