I am considering purchasing the book called, "13 Steps to Mentalism".
Would this book be considered the "Bobo's Modern Coin Magic" equivalent for getting into Mentalism illusions? |

Joedy, please refer to the thousands of other posts that discuss this book. At the top right hand of the page is a search facility which will help to answer your questions.

13 Steps is a STUDY book, the same as Tarbell, Bobo, etc., and should be used as such. If you are thinking of purchasing this in order to learn a few tricks, then do not buy this book, do not even consider mentalism (because if you are not going to study the techniques for years and learn it all, without relying on gimmicks, you do not belong in this area anyway) and just keep on buying simple tricks. If you are serious about studying and learning ALL the techiniques you can in mentalism, then this is the way to start.

Joedy, why not consider getting Max Maven's Video Mind series. You learn wonderful effects, ideas and presentational style, like no other performer does it. And you get to "See" it being done.

Thanks for the replies. In retrospect, I did use the search function to find out some more information, and it seems that this is the way to start.
I'm not looking for a book of quick mental tricks, but an in depth study of the history, development and the application of mentalism. Thanks for the feedback, Paul. I think that I'm on the same page with you when you mention the significant difference between "tricks" and "magic". Even the best gaffed trick given a bad presentation doesn't even come close to the wonder of a truly magical presentation with non-gaffed props. I have learned that a poor performance disappoints me as the performer more than it disappoints the audience members. I find that the ability to suspend belief of the audience members MUCH more difficult that the physical handling skills that are required. |

If you the entertainer do not believe in your abilities, then the audience will NOT believe in them either...

For someone "getting into mentalism," 13 Steps and Annemann aren't the place to start.
Start with something really simple....like Walter Gibson's Self-Working Mental Magic...and try and customize/dress up the simple effects therein...make them your own. And as I recall, Marvin Kaye's book on mentalism and Henning Nelms' book on showmanship helped me somewhere along the way in developing my mentalism in its earliest stages. Any other books focusing on presentation would be helpful too. Then read Annemann and 13 Steps in a whole different light. You'll appreciate them much more. |

Very well put, Mystic1. One has to develop an appreciation for mentalism before jumping into the more heavy stuff. Otherwise, you'll have your senses boggled and never really understand where you're going or have been.

Not only 13 steps, but Annemanns' stuff as well. These are great places to start as you'll be directed the right way. Classic books no question about it. But you know what? Read whatever you can get your hands on. That's key.

The Magic book by Harry Lorayne is what started me off and I'd recommend it to anyone interested in starting magic or mentalism.

Although it's not a great place to START, it is a necessary read for every mentalist and even a somewhat beginner should have a copy.

I cannot say enough about the book. The interview with Fogel is, alone, almost worth the price of the book.

All good advice, but don't drown yourself in information.
I'm not well placed to give advice to anyone, but go to the places where the professionals give advice : Ian Rowland's website, for example. And the 39 steps of Cassidy contain great book reviews. You can find it for free on his website too. From there on, make your own, wise decisions... Just my 2 cents,

Fundamentals by Bob Cassidy is probably the best book for a beginner as it covers much more than just techniques it deals with character development and asks questions of the reader instead of just telling them "do it like this"

Perhaps he'll have finished "13 steps" by now... Thus he might be ready to follow up all the other great advice in this thread.
