I filter out all email that has an exclaimation point in the subject.
I shove it all into a spam folder for a quick check before I delete it all. 99.995% of these are ALL spam. This helps a lot. Often just that one filter does better than yahoo's own spam filter.

My whole family has no spam filters at all and no anti virus programmes. That's why we have zero spam and zero viruses.
Although we used to have them when we had the anti virus programmes... |

Edith....that makes no sense to me?
The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed. - Einstein

Who can trust anti-spam programs and adwares? I think that's what shes trying to convey here.
I have an account which I did not sign up for anything. I put spam filter on to the lowest level, and I don't have anyother stuff on computer related to spam blocking etc. I haven't gotten a real spam in a whlie now. xD |

FatTony....it works.
We only have two programmes left on our computer in order for our little friend to stay clean and healthy... One is to ensure no programme checks on any updates on itsself every time the computer is connected to the web, the other one is to find the programmes that do that secretly. The last one found about 9 viruses right after reinstalling plain windows. It didn't have any other software on it yet and hadn't been connected to the internet, yet there were quite a few already there... from our most loved and praised hero MICROSOFT.... Imagine..... why do we need those "protecting" software? Because there are viruses around. So we buy protecting software. What happens if we are to eliminate all viruses by that? we wouldn't need an update or a new anti-virus software.... so those software creaters better make sure there are always new viruses around that their software can find. But they only have to make sure all THEIR costumers get them. By the way the two programmes we use are FREEware on the internet. The best things in life you get for free... Edith |

I have some issues with some of the comments in this thread. So here's some clarification to stop the scaremongers winning.
There are no viruses in Windows! The reason Microsoft applications 'phone home' is to get updates and such. They don't share 'personally identifyably' data. There are no viruses in Windows (this needs saying again) As far as anti virus info is concerned please read http://www.vmyths.com If you want a clean healthy computer. Use a firewall to stop viruses finding you. Use a good av program. Don't use 'free' apps (a general rule with _some_ exceptions). Watch what you do online, safe hex is good hex. FWIW I'm a systems administrator responsible for security for a larges heavy electrical engineering company. If you have any questions feel free to PM me. And the original point of this thread, What a great filter. I think I'll add that to my list of rules.

Again, it is a great filter.
This thread got completly off track with mis-information. Thanks for the comments acmp. Anytime someone I know sends me an email with a "!" I kindly tell them that it is a bad idea and that spam filter software often filters out that "!" character. 'nuff said. try it. filter out "!" into a special folder for a while and see how it does. you'll be surprised. Posted: Mar 2, 2006 2:50pm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Just for fun, I checked my folder that filters this stuff and found 21 emails in the last 4 days. ALL SPAM. NO REAL MAIL. Actually, I also filter out the "$". Who sends a real email with a "$" in the subject??? NOBODY!! So, here are the nasty buggers that I caught.
