If you want to do a killer goldfish routine, check out Chris Randall's FRANKENFISH on his 'SWEEEET' DVD... I've done it and it gets KILLER reactions! Maybe also look in Tarbell, if you don't have a set already look on eBay to find a discounted set.
Sorry Chez, I don't have any silk ones to spare... but if you want any of the cotton ones I've acquired while on the road I'll drop them off at Max and Erma's next time you're doing walk around.

Ok you can't use my real name on here anymore...I'm in the witness protection program from Heather...so from now on call me Hans Ferrarie. I think its got a nice ring to it and its original...right.....guys...? I just can't take her ballet bows at curtain call anymore cuz I'd start to feel a hate crime coming on....I guess you could say the "tide is high but I'm movin' on"

Now this post has nothing to do with the original topic .. so let's get back to that.
Let's see, there was this guy that wants to essentially do the same exact routine that Copperfield does with a goldfish and everyone is in an uproar about it. Now let's get back on track here .. Steve P.S. Hans .. I sent you a small clipping from the Naperville Sun about your girl Heather .. look for it in the mail. |

Chris Kenner advised that Tides was his, not Homer's. He did not specifically say that Homer was not involved though, and they often work together on routines like this. It is also true, effects like this have been around for years - Davis just specifically needed something else involving the moon, so that was one of the things they came up with.
Please do not take this in a bad way, but Tides could easily be duplicated, but why not be respectful, not to mention original, and come up with something entirely different? This will be something you are much more proud of and will take you a lot further in the long run... that is... unless it sucks. |

Excellent advice by Jeff007 .. you will be more proud of your own work. There are plenty of copies out there .. and that's all you'll be known for .. being a copy of someone else.
I don't have much to worry about .. Steve |

The TIDES illusion was totally awesome. I'd love to know how to do it and I'd love to be able to do it.
BUT - this is one of those illusions that is very uniquely David's. I have never seen anyone else do anything even close to it. The idea of making live goldfish appear is cool, though. Certainly there are some other presentations that could be done using the same idea - making live goldfish appear - but not use the wine glass or not use the rock or not use this or that. This would satisfy the desire to make an unusual live animal appear without copying an existing presentation. The FLOATING ROSE routine is one of those made well known by DC that a lot of people do now, myself included. That one is a little bit harder to change up and make it original. But it certainly does amaze people. Kevin James currently performs it in World's Greatest Magic in Vegas to great applause. He is of course the originator of the effect - I am glad DC did not decide to go with exclusive rights on that one because it's just too good not to do it, even thought it is very hard to do. --Jack http://www.jack-stephens.com |

The water appeared and vanished from the glass when he would drape a cloth over it and pass a "moon rock" around the glass. In the end he made not just one goldfish appear, but a whole glass full from his hands. The story was about how the moon affects the tides - high tide/low tide/etc. and "after the moon, and the tides, came life" (cue goldfish appearance) just to answer the question of what the effect was.

Sadly enough, we painfully watched all 46 takes of Tides... It's not as easy to get as perfect as you saw on TOF as you might think. (especially when you are one of the people in the spotlight tower - HA HA!)

Hey Jeff007-
Where was that special shot? I don't remember, someone told me at one point. Was it in Memphis or someplace near there? 46 takes, wow, that's a lot. A guy I worked with on the DC tour told me they took 2 days to shoot that special, and that they did multiple takes for many of the illusions. Of course, the audiences present learned how each and every one of them works. But, I believe it was Gary Oulette who said, when you are shooting magic for TV it doesn't matter a bit if the live audience sees how everything is done. All that matters is that greater, much larger TV audience. So the live audience is sort of a "collateral damage" if you will. Anyhow, I am really wondering where TOF was shot. --Jack |

I believe Genii Magazine did an exclusive interview on location during the filming.... If I recall, Copperfield is on the cover of the issue as well...
Let me try to dig it up... Bryan |

It was the April 2001 issue of MAGIC that did the on location report of the filming, which was actually over a week period. Genii later did an in depth story on the special but focused more on the aspect of what it takes to travel with the show, moving in and out of theaters and what new illusions were in the hopper.

I do recall the MAGIC magazine... or maybe it was Genii... that had the "backstage tour" where they talked about the load in and set up and such. In fact I have that issue. I haven't seen an issue that talks about the TOF special, though.

OK - from what I can tell it was shot at Mid South Coliseum in Memphis, TN and was a free event for anyone who wanted to attend.

Get this .. they actually used cardboard cutouts in many of the seats to fill the auditorium. If you look closely you can see Spock from Star Trek in the balcony.

Back to the goldfish thing. I checked out the champagne goldfish illusion as someone mentioned.
Can I do this with any glass or is there a special one provided? |
