Many levitations being sold today do not come with the oh-so-critical hoop.
Sure, you could go out and buy a $10 hula hoop at toysrus and sure you could spend $600 on Blaney's hoop. But is there something in the middle? I just want a large chrome hoop. Does anyone sell something like this for ~$100? |

I bought two chrome hoops at a flea market. Many times dealers have these really nice looking chrome hoops which used to be used as clothing racks. I paid $30 each for them. They had three small holes in them which I sealed and the hoops look great.
Check out these flea market locations or look in the area of places that sell used clothing racks. It is a lot cheaper than Blaney's hoops.

There's always The Great White Hoop for what -- $1500?
Just kidding . If you want a chrome hoop, you could go and buy that $10 Hula Hoop and spray paint it to look chrome. If you need to gaff it, it's a hula hoop, so it can easily be accomplished. There may even be some toy stores that sell chrome hula hoops, or maybe even a hula hoop maker that sells metal hula hoops! Try doing a search for Hula Hoops -- I'm sure you will come across something.

Dave;
If you want a good strong hoop that everyone will recognize as a normal object to pass over the floating person, you might use a bicycle wheel (less tire, spokes, hub). They are great! If you want a polished aluminum hoop, go to a metal supplier who sells aluminum tubing. The 1" diameter tubing comes in coils about 3 feet in diameter. You can just buy one coil and join it to make a nice hoop. Buff it for a high polish, if desired. Jim |

Please excuse my clue-less-ness...but isn't a hoop just that...A HOOP? Why in the world would any hoop cost 1500 bucks? What's the deal...it's a circle....isn't it?
Seems to me that death is just natures way of telling us to SLOW DOWN!

When you buy a hoop, always remember that the hoop will be on stage for about 8 seconds to pass over your assistant. If you could get away with a $10 hula hoop, why would you ever want to buy a $1500 piece of metal? Think about what you want to spend your money on. Put it into the levitation first.

Well, it's the Great White Hoop is gaffed in such a way that in some levitations, you can make a pass over the person floating in a single, fluid manner. Impossible to do with an ungaffed hula hoop.

Just a quick note. I had my hoop made for about $30.00. Buy 1" aluminum pipe or conduit from a metal store (calculate the length you need to match the diameter of the hoop you want.) Go to a metal shop or an electricians shop {one with a pipe bender}(they could order the pipe too if you want) have them bend the pipe into a hoop and weld it (or in mine they put in a little nub and pinned it in). Then take it to a plating shop and have them powder coat or nickle plate or chrome it. Or spray paint it.
I then put in my own gimmick to allow it to pass around a person without the gooseneck move. -vk

The difference between a "hoop" and a Blaney hoop, of either design, is significant! While smooth handling can make a double pass seem OK, this isn't the same as one smooth, sweeping pass over the floating body. Just watch some of the videos with Lance or DC with a Blaney hoop in action.
Additonally, making a gaff hoop is trickier than it seems. Pop apart a hula hoop and you will understand why! Walter has done the experimentation and invested in the correct tools to produce these... well worth the investment if you can find one for sale. A year ago or so he claimed to be making the final run. Track him down and call him. He is very helpful on the phone and can help you decide which hoop you really need and why. |

If I made the 32 million a year Cooperfield makes, I'd have a Blaney Hoop in a heart beat!

Just to clear things up a bit:
The Blaney big white Hoop is made from white plastic and available for $500 and it can be passed over a levitation in one move. Walter does also sells his "real" Blaney Hoop, wich features an ingenius method which is completely indetectable (even close up) and is made from chromed metal (stainlees) but is priced somewhere around $3500. It uses a completely different method than the white hoop. I use his white hoop together with his Ladder Levitation and must admit it really gets a gasp from the audience when I pull the hoop through with just one move. Even for lay people the difference between passing a hoop twice or in one clean move is obvious. It´s really worth its price, and I even think I will save up for the metal hoop. |

If you are not needing a Gaff hoop, I always liked the idea of Jack Gwynne, inventor of flying carpet and Super X. He took a long piece of regular magicians rope. He cored it, then put a stiff piece of wire in it...like electrical wire. You tie the ends together, wad it up in the car, pull it out at the show, make it generally round and it really does not look bad and it certainly does not look possible to fake it. Worked well with his middle east costumes and would look good with any sort of western theme too. Very practical.

The rope hoop is a great idea... this also allows you to use a taller volunteer from the audience... not a small consideration.
A friend uses a jungle theme for his version of the Flying Carpet... and uses a rope dyed green, with artificial leaves attached to it. The kid holds this during the suspension... which keeps his/her hands away from the back of the illusion... and opens it up to pass it over them. Packs within the rest of the illusion, too! |

In the same vein of easy and no gimmick, you can buy a piece of the clear plastic vinyl hose at a plumbing shop. Find a dowel that fits tightly inside it. Then you can make a big circle that you can take apart for carrying by just pulling the dowel out of one end. If you want it a bit stiffer, again a piece of white electrical wire inside the tube does not really show up and adds body.

I use a two hoop technique that fools those who think they are "in the know".

The comment "levitations are sold without the hoop".
Why not be creative???? I use a pirate-style sword with my Super-X, which also rests in a support in front of the ----- to hide it. I use a hand changeover which would be normal to do under the board, to pass it from one side to the other. No curtain at the front. For the Broom Suspension I use a large ostrich feather fan, 36 feathers, multishades of blue and 40" wide. (I also have 12 others for the girls in the show which makes for quite a background!!!) others just use the other broom! I have seen dynamic moves with just your arms making a circle, now those can't (or shouldn't) be gimmicked! So many things could be used, step out of the box! Blair Marshall "ShaZzam!"

The Blaney Hoops are well worth the money. Even the metal one. They allow you to pass the hoop w/o all the quirkey turns that every knows is to get around the support. You can try to convince yourself otherwise, but I have had too many people in the audience comment about it later after the show. Unfortunately, with the exposure programs you have to stay ahead of the curve.
