For the life of me I can't remember where I have seen this. I am looking for some pointer as to where to learn this effect.
You have a number of cups, and ask a spectator to place an item under one of the cup while your back is turned, you then pick the right cup, this is done a number of times etc. Free choice from what I remember for the spec. Sorry I cant give more details, but I have had this running thru my mind and I like the whole suggestion angle you can play on this. Any suggstions? steve
I do look forward to the day when you post something constructive.

Rick Maue has a version of this effect called "Terasabos" and it is in his BOOK OF HAUNTED MAGIC.
There is also a commerical effect called Killer Red Caps which is exactly the same effect you mention. Bill Palmer was discussing this type effect as it was offered on EBAY using 3 plastic cups. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......5&17 There have been a host of others that use this plot, ot the opposite plot (avoiding the cup with the object. (The spike or knife under the cup is very popular right now). Alain Nu did a phenominal version of this on a set of stairs in San Francisco for his television series. Tony |

I've seen the effect you're describing being performed by Derren Brown on the Russian Roulette television special which is where you might've seen it before. Regards EC |

Bob Cassidy also published an effect using beer bottle caps and a coin in The Artful Mentalism.

Steve,
There is an old effect that I know of that is 100% impromtpu (as long as you have opaque cups on hand) and works like a charm. Forgive me as I do not know the name or the creator of the effect, but maybe someone here will so I will describe it: You present 3 opaque cups in a horizontal line on a table (they can all be the same or different cups) and invite a spectator to place an object under any one of the cups while your back is turned. You explain that the cup's positions are 1, 2 and 3 from the spectator's left to right, respectively. While your back is turned you tell your spectator to switch the other two cups that do not have the object under them. When they are finished doing that, you instruct them that they can switch any two cups, but they must call out the positions being switched (ie. If they switch the far left cup with the far right cup, they call out "1 and 3". If they then switch the cup on the far right with the cup in the middle, they call out "2 and 3" and so on). They can switch cups for as long as they like and when they are finished you are able to turn around and immediately know which cup contains the object. There is absolutely no peeking involved with this and there are no gimmicks. The first time I saw this, I was working at a local magic shop and the owner showed this to me. He must have repeated the effect at least 12 times in a row with 100% success. It had me climbing the walls trying to figure it out, but at the end of the day, he finally tipped the method. I've used this in quite a lot of those "Oooh, show me something" situations at restaurants and bars. |

There is a really workable version of this in a lot of Children Magic Books. It can also be used to find out if somebody was in your room, opened a box of yours etc.
PM me if you wanna know...

The effect that I described above is done using mathematics. I'm not sure that this would be in a children's book.

I do a version of this over the Radio and it KILLS. No cups or numbers involved. The concept is very usable in many ways.

Is the radio version your own method? Are you familiar with the one that I described above? |

Yes, the method uses mathemathics, though it doesn't appear to be mathemathics and very difficult to figure out. r1z08, thanks for reminding me of this nice forgotten effect. Gábor

Does anyone know the name or creator of the effect? I'm just curious because it is a simple effect, but it does pack a punch especially after it has been repeated a few times.

While not the mathematical, there is a version of this in Dunninger's Encyclopedia, and if memory serves, there was a reference in Scott's Discoverie, though I will not swear it as my copy is not here for me to check right now.
