I´m invited to perform at the austrian magic congress mentalism-competition.
does anyone know a place on the net where to find acts from other competitions? just to see what others did. the reason why I will accept the invitation is that a award could really help in business here in austria. to be honest, that´s the only reason tommy wonder will be in the jury, Michael Ammar too I think, no mentalists this is the act I plan to do, please let me know what you think about: the source is a berglas effect but I changed it completly 5 chairs on stage 5 spectators have free choice for the chair they choose 5 envelopes are shuffled by a spectator and dealt to the sitting spectators a deck of symbols is shown to the audience esp symbols and others, different designs are shown another spectator cuts the deck than he deals the next 5 cards from where he freely cutted and puts the cards on a stand so everybody can see them than the performer explains that card to the left is number 1, next 2....... so there is no possibility to count different ways spectator is asked to name a number from 1 to 5 and this card will be used no magicians choice spectator says for example 2 design 2 is a triangle for example spectator in chair number 2 is asked to open his envelop the designs match now a berglas joke say that was easy , because in all 5 envelopes is the same design audience is still impressed because the other spectators choice was number 2 than you say it was a joke and let open all envelopes 2they are all different the interesting thing is (next effect), the order of the dealt cards is the same like the order of the designs in the envelopes spectators take cards from envelopes, 5 normal envelopes with just one design each and it was a free cut next effect the 5 spectators are asked to turn their chairs on the backs of the chairs is a design each, all designs matches with the designs in the envelopes only one design on each chair, no multiple outs climax a big envelope wich was in full sight the whole routine is mentioned and opened there is the same design in it but that´s not all spectator is asked again, what was the number you choosed? he says 2 you turn the design card over, there is a big 2 on it that´s it hope you have understand all lol i´m sure I could win a competition with this routine as many others say: NO STOOGES !! NO PRESHOW !! thx mario |

Like I said before, I think it is too involved and complex...

Why does Icy's age have anything to do with it?
It is to involved, because for your opener it does not smack anybody in the mouth. In my opinion you should walk out and blow some people of there seats. We live in a world of low attention spans. If your first effect takes 10 minutes before payoff you will have lost half of the audience. that's my two cents. Some will agree and some will disagree. |

I think it's a compliment! I usually get pegged for older.
I just think a comlicated chair routine with cutting cards etc is a little too "messy" for a comp...

I´m just curious about his age, that´s all.
this is no opener, this should be one single 8 to 10 minutes act. hope to get really good advices because it seems that everyone tries to tell me that he is a better performer. don´t worry about me, I have a good act, at least I think so because of my rebookings and amount of gigs I do. maybe I understand you wrong, hope you don´t understand me wrong |

You worte very nice Chair routine but... complicated.
Too much revelations that returns on thereself. The finish with number 2 is clever, try and think on the effect for the opening of the act. The first BANG came in late, you need to open and immediately blow some people of there seats. Good luck, Tom. |

Acts have had to change, and the original Berglas routine which would have played extreamly strong to all audiences 30 years ago, would meet with mixed results with most of today's audiences. Just look at the movie insudtry, many of the blockbuster movies of the 70's would be box office flops in today's entertainment world. They would move to slow.
The only advice that I can, or will give a this is your act to build, is record it with a live audience. Record it 2 ways, 1 camera on you, another on the audience. Study the audience tape and see their reactions. Study your performance, see if it drags, work on tightening up the act and simplfying where you might lose the audience. Then repeat the taping and analysis. Good luck. Tony |

Tony,
I think you are absolutly wrong in your opinnion on the berglas routines. there are only a few in his great book you have to change for a todays audience, the rest is still up to date. to the young rabbit: you really know about what i´m speaking? |

Munger, my age has nothing to do with my opinion. I'm not sure what your last post meant...

You asked for advice, I offered. Whether you agree or not, this is a reality. I did not say all audiences, I said most audiences. I was at a national magic convention this past summer, one person did a fantastic act, it would have made Neal Foster proud. This act was perfect in execution, it was what we all strove for in a magic act in the 1970s. This act did not even place. It is up to you as to what advice you accept, and what you disguard. I do find it funny that you ask for advice and negativly comment on those who answer your call. But that too is you decison. What it all comes down to, is YOU were invited to compete, YOU have to perform, and YOU will be voted on. It is all up to you, make your decisions and move on them. Tony |
