Hi all,
I am working on my spring- summer show and I had what I think is a great idea, but I need your help in putting it together. I want to do the spirit cabinet in my clown show. I don’t want to do the traditional routine with the extra something. I want to get in the cabinet alone and have funny stuff happen to me each time it’s lowered. I will have someone come from the audience to tie me up and to assist me with going through the things in the can before entering the cabinet. As far as my character, I am a very outgoing life-of-the-party type clown. I love to play pranks on others. Any ideas you can give me to help me develop this routine will be appreciated. Magically Yours, DANIEL

Well, the simplest answer is to make your spirits a "foil" to your character, so they could pull similar pranks on you. Let's say for instance you placed a whoopie cushion on someone's seat earlier in the show (Not the best example, I know). Well, then while in the cabinet, just turn the tables on yourself and have the spirit put a whoopie cushion on your seat. This could also lead to a lot of funny gags and sight gags. It's a basic idea, but later then you can ask to have the curtain raised around you so you can try to get even with the spirit for pulling pranks on you. Eventually, you could have the ropes cut to make it a fair fight, and go back into the cabinet. While inside you "blindfold" the spirit in order to confuse it. And you can then have the cabinet drop and perform a zombie routine as if it is the spirit under the cloth, blinded by it. Eventually, the spirit escapes, leaving you feeling slightly defeated with just an un-enchanted ball and cloth in your hands.
For some reason that scenario was just the first thing to come to mind. I hope it helps. Nick Fox |

You might want to ask this in the Clown section of the Forum. I'm sure the first thing they will want to know is if you are a silent clown (mime) or a talker since that will determine the boundaries for the directions you can go. Tying up a clown seems so cruel and what's the reason? There's a funny ghost routine in The Wizards' Journal #6 on my site, called "Poltergeist" that doesn't require the tying and the cabinet and might be more suited to your character.
