Have you seen these?
I got hold of mine a few weeks back and had to rip them open the watch them right away. GOOD POINTS This DVD set contains some of the most usable and entertaining mentalism out there. I really mean it. John Archer's ideas and presentations are really excellent. Even if you do not use the material on this set you will be thoroughly entertained. John is, in my opinion, one of the funniest men in magic. You might not have heard of him, that's because he's so busy performign for real people all over the place. This shows in his performances as he adlibs and delivers lines left right and centre with amazing and precise skill. Hillarious comedy and extremely strong magic! There is something for everyone here, a no book booktest and Archer's amazing version of Kenton's Kolossal Killer were my personal highlights. BAD POINTS The only bad thing I can think of is that in the explanations some of the "panel" are not easy to hear as they havent got mics. The second DVD in the set is on John's Blindfold Tips. This is a good DVD which goes into detail on how John gets about his blindfold routine. He covers in great detail what he has learned through many many performances of a blindfold routine. Obviously he is still a young and sprity lad The negative point of these is that the DVD only contains one effect. It does go in to great detail of the process of being blindfolded and how to do so effectively. He also goes into his motivation, rational and psychology of the blindfold act. He only performs one effect blindfolded, I would have liked to have seen more effects using this great tool. But as ever it is really entertaining from start to finish. Apologies that the review is a bit disjointed, very tired but thought this product deserved a review. I know Alakazam.co.uk are stocking them. Kennedy Mind Magician

Kennedy,
Thanks for the review! I was thinking about picking these up the other day and now I think I will. Was there anything that you saw that really stood out other than his humor in the videos? |

Some nice ideas on a magic square presentation and I liked his no force word prediction.

I think both of the John Archer DVDs are superb.
For the few who are still unaware, John is one of the very finest mentalists working today. He is in demand all over the place - both here in the UK and overseas - for the simple and excellent reason that he is a very gifted and impressive entertainer. He manages that rare feat of being VERY funny and entertaining while also delivering first-class, very baffling mentalism that can leave people stunned. The 'Blindfold Tips' DVD is in two parts. First, you see John performing his blindfold routine, which can run anything from 15 minutes to over half an hour, depending on how well things are going and what the audience is like. I've had the pleasure of seeing John present this peerless routine several times, and it's a winner all the way. This particular performance was specially taped for the DVD, and suffers just a little from the fact that (a) it's a relatively small audience and (b) it's not a 'real' performing venue. The performance is still very impressive, and gives a taste of just how funny John can be, but you'd have to see him working a club or cabaret audience to see him really shine. Then comes the 'explanation' section, which is more than just a walk-through of John's specific routine. You are basically getting a comprehensive explanation of the best, simplest and most baffling blindfold method you could ever want or need (two coins and a roll of gaffer tape... and you're all set), plus a host of tips and hints derived from John's extensive professional working experience concerning all aspects of blindfold work - from choosing the two helpers to coping with problems that can arise from time to time. The 'Educating Archer' DVD is also well worth buying. All of the routines are good, strong, commercial mentalism routines that offer great entertainment with real bafflement and mystery. You don't have to have John's comic talent to be able to adapt and use these routines... they are all 100% practical and relatively easy to do in terms of moves, timing etc. In each case you see a performance and then a detailed explanation. I'm delighted that these two superb DVDs are available. I've admired John's work for a long time, and these DVDs are an opportunity to learn one heck of a lot from a guy who knows this business inside out. If I had to offer any constructive criticism, first of all I would have liked the 'performance' segments to have been recorded in front of something closer to a typical John Archer audience, just so that these DVDs could give a better idea of just how good John is - seeing him work a typical club or cabaret crowd is an opportunity to learn from a master. Secondly, some of the explanation segments are perhaps a bit indulgent, chatty and long-winded, and some viewers will perhaps wish for more succinct, point-by-point explanations. However, these are very minor points. John Archer is a truly BRILLIANT mentalist, and anyone interested in mentalism can learn a lot from his thinking, his approach and, most of all, his performing talent. Highly recommended.

Thanks Ian! Good stuff! As I said, I was considering these DVDs and now I am ready for the purchase. I have heard of John, but never have seen him perform.
Is it me or is Mentalism more popular in the UK then it is in the US? I find that in the US, people seem to lean more towards street and close-up magic, while it seems that Mentalism is the choice in the UK. By the way, Mr. Rowland, when are we going to see 'Mind Power: Fact, Fiction & Fakery' on DVD? Just curious. |

I just got the educating Archer dvd and love it. Some real good material, very funny. You do not normaly see powerful magic and omedy together, but he is an exception, kind of like Dave Williamson. I highly recomend this dvd

While attending the British Ring Convention last fall, someone pointed to John Archer and said, "You wouldn't know it, but that guy is one of the funniest magicians around."
Later in the week, I watched John on the main show, and then later at the end of the convention at the "Fringe" show. Oh my gosh! The convention organizers were there, along with the Mayor of Southport. John was so funny picking on the Mayor...the place was going nuts. I don't know if I've laughed that hard since then! Anybody else here at the Café who was at that "Fringe" show? By the way, what I've seen so far of the dvd's has been great.

In my honest opinion John is one of the funniest acts in the UK. And what's more he does it all with harmless fun, not a smidge of smut and with killer magic and mentalism.
If you get a chance to see this bloke lecture climb hills and swim rivers to do so. You will learn a lot about entertainment and this business in general. If he gives you some advice, listen. Apartf rom being a "big northern bloke" he knows his stuff and his advice has helped me go from being terrible to better Kennedy

I think both DVDs are excellent, and would recommend them to anyone.
But I sure wouldn't like to have been the young lady who was dragged onto stage for the blindfold routine. And from the look on her face I'm not convinced she wanted to be herself at that moment, either. Ian |

Purchased Educating Archer and John is certainly very entertaining and definitely worth watching. I’m sure will gain a whole new audience from these DVDs.
It would be nice to Alakazam putting a bit more effort into the camera work and ‘sets’ as it would enhance the production and do the performer justice.

Sorry, but I'm a little confused from Kennedy's statement: "The second DVD in the set is on John's Blindfold Tips".
Does the two dvd set from "Educating Archer" contain the Blindfold tips? Thanks--CM. |

Hate mentioning this as it will leak material in sale, but this was the finest performance Ive seen in a long time! The only 3 DVD's I could ever watch from a magician in their entirety!
Way to go John! |

You better and I'll buy a few rounds.
Best purchase of 2006! Kennedy, don't worry the language barrier was also experienced with the gaffers tape. p.S. I saw criticisms above, so why should I hold back, one concern souldn't we get a better set of judges. It was like watching a SAM meeting. And what the heck was up with all the leg touching! |

I like these DVDs very much (I´ve seen only Educating Archer), but a drawback for me with my bad English is the language of John, especially a lot of his jokes I can´t understand. Is there a printed version of his performances (he shows in the explanation part a booklet, but I can´t find it by Alkazam)?
