I know that this has probably already been reviewed by others, but I have just got to say again how incredible this effect is. I almost can't put it into words how this affects people. I was shown it for the first time only 4 days ago at my local magic shop and was absolutely blown away. I pride myself on having a good eye for sleights/methods on how an effect is performed or how it may be gaffed, etc. But I couldn't figure out how this one was pulled off with exception of the obvious stuff (where the cards came from). I bought it a couple of days ago from Penguin magic and got it today. After only 20 minutes of practice and preperation I was ready to perform it for the first time. I played out the routine (patter and all) for my mom and she was floored, and I mean FLOORED! This was only a couple of hours after I had recieved the effect. This is one of those rare effects that hits the spectator at an emotional level. Nothing is stronger than that.
Paul Harris has genuinely come up with a classic effect here. It has all of the great traits of a great effect: 1.) It's easy to master- You can pick it up for the first time and be performing it adequately in less than an hour. 2.)There is virtually no sleight of hand involved with exception of the opening force which can be performed by a novice with no problems. 3.)It is virtually angle proof. 4.) It has about a 5 second reset so it's possible to perform it in an impromptu setting 5.)It has an impact that stretches far beyond the actual performance and finish of the routine. Your spectators are going to remember this one forever. I think that this may be the greatest packet trick ever along with Jim Temples 'Color Monte'. I have seen hundreds of packet tricks performed and have been impressed by a lot of them, but not like this. There have been only two tricks performed for me that I knew I HAD to have and ran out and got literally the next day or so and that is this effect and color monte. The beauty of this effect is that the spectator thinks that your telling them their fortune, so all of the heat is off of you immediately. No one is looking for a card trick so you don't have to worry about being extra cautious. The props included in the effect are top quality as well. I can not recommend this one enough. For those who have seen it or have it, you already know this, but for those who have not seen it or do not have it- get it now!!! The $40 price tag may seem a bit steep but you will be getting an effect that will be a staple of your performances forever. |

I like Deep astonishment I better. I like the premise and the wallet looks more like a checkbook you get from the bank.
They are both great, but In my opinion and for my style, I like Deep I.

You cannot buy Deep Astonishment I any longer as it has been discontinued. I have Deep I and the handling is not very streamlined. The plastic checkbook wallet screams prop to me vs the elegant custom made leather envelope in Deep II (which is a lot more classy), IMO.

Evolve629 is right on!
I felt Deep I was horrible. I sold it immediately. Deep II goes beyond what I could ever expect from an effect. If I invented it, I would never have tipped it as a price can't be put on it.

The original version, "The Anything Deck," from AoA, works well for me, especially when combined with learning the word through a p**k and throwing in a little cold reading along the way.

I haven't seen the original Deep Astonishment but I can't imagine it being better than this, especially with a regualr deck. The beauty of this effect, again, is that the spectator thinks that your telling them their fortune, so they are not looking for a card trick. That adds to the ending which is like a shot right between the eyes to them. It's an incredible effect that I'm never going to do without again.
I have some great effects and routines that I use all the time and I'm not sure if anything comes close to the reactions that you can get with DAII. I would say that the only problem I have with the effect is the deck. They could have given the gypsy cards a bit more of an antique look and feel rather than the cheesy looking powder blue card backs and the gypsy drawn on the box and the cards. Otherwise, this is the perfect effect. |

You could probably just create another deck with a nice Tarot pack - the key would be the special something card to create - but it shouldn't be a bother since most Tarot decks come with a couple of extra cards to stick together

I would call it that because it is a self-contained trick that you can purchase in a off of a shelf. Therefore it is a "packet trick". You don't have to use anything else with it, it comes with everything you need. What is your definition of a packet trick....a plastic wallet with a few cards in it?
This is a packet trick, plain and simple. |

Zombie, (complete with ball, gimmick and foulard)? All of these can be bought off the shelf and come complete, you don't have to use anything else with it. Just stop for a moment and consider how misguided your "definition" is. Do a little research on the Café. Contact Paul Hallas, a member here and expert on the Packet Trick, (he's even written a book on the history of packet-tricks.) The "packet" in the title does not refer to the fact that the effect comes in a "packet," in the same way that your breakfast cereal comes in a box or packet, but rather that a small "packet" of cards is used for an often quick sequence of hopefully pleasing magic, (your Color Monte is an ideal example). And yes, a useful place to store them is in a black plastic wallet. These are not packet tricks, even plainer and even simpler. |
